Ukrainians and Russians. And then Iranians and Americans. Whilst their respective countries are grappling with bloody and devastating conflicts, young economists from all over the world sit side by side to attend a lecture by Michael Spence, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics.
This is no ordinary cultural bridge, and once again it is being forged by Iseo (Institute for Economic and Employment Studies), a foundation established in the Lombard town of the same name, which is running its Summer School for the 22nd year.
The 2026 edition is set to break records: whereas attendance has traditionally stood at around 70 participants, this year the Summer School is hosting as many as 100 young economists from 41 countries, bringing the total number of young people who have taken part in the course since its first edition in 2004 to over 1,500.
This year’s achievement was the result of a rigorous selection process: the Foundation received almost 300 applications from all over the world, from which the best candidates – including PhD students, university lecturers and Master’s students – were selected, arriving in Sebino from 73 prestigious universities.
To follow a week of study and debate dedicated to the new global economic order, covering new macroeconomic balances, the rollercoaster ride of international trade, the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence, the green transition, emerging inequalities in the labour market and persistent global inflation.
