Israel: Eisenkot appointed to lead the government. Hormuz: two more oil tankers ablaze
A turning point in Israel following the elections. President Herzog has informed Yashar party leader Eisenkot of his intention to task him with forming the new government. The meeting and official announcement are scheduled for 5 pm today. Eisenkot’s name had been put forward during consultations by political forces representing a total of 67 Knesset members, whilst parties with a combined total of 46 MPs backed the outgoing Prime Minister and Likud leader, Netanyahu. On the Iran front, a US strike has targeted Qeshm. However, there is a rift within the White House: Vance is at the forefront of efforts to reach an agreement.

Katz’s remarks: ‘Israel’s mission in Iran is not over’
Israel’s mission in Iran “is not over”, the Israeli Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said on Sunday, reiterating allegations that Tehran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons – a claim which the Islamic Republic has long denied. “As far as Iran is concerned, the mission is not yet over. Iran is attempting to renew its efforts to acquire nuclear weapons,” Katz said during an official ceremony in Jerusalem, adding that Israel is “prepared for any scenario” and “will act for as long as necessary to protect” its citizens
Pasdaran: ‘Iron Gate? It’s just a play on words’
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has dismissed the US military plan to extend the blockade of Iranian ports to the country’s land borders as mere ‘wordplay’. ‘The Americans cannot achieve their objective in this way, namely to exert strong economic pressure to bring down and destabilise the Iranian economy,’ said the Pasdaran spokesperson, Sardar Mohebi, in comments to the Fars news agency reported by Al Jazeera. In the past, Washington had “claimed that Iran would suffer an economic collapse within two weeks, but we have seen that this did not happen”, he added. The US Central Command has announced that its ‘Iron Gate’ task force will be responsible for ‘cutting off’ Iran’s land supply routes and preventing the transit of weapons. Iran shares borders with seven countries – Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan – and also borders the Caspian Sea.
CENTCOM: ‘New Iron Gate task force to block Iranian land routes’
The US armed forces aim to block Iran’s land routes, thereby extending the reach of the naval blockade. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command (Centcom), has announced the creation of the ‘Iron Gate’ task force, whose objective will be to limit Iran’s ability to transport weapons and prohibited materials. The task force comprises around 20 members, including both civilian and military personnel, and is based in Tampa, Florida. The new team – Centcom explained – will work in coordination with other US government agencies to counter the transit of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, sanctioned materials and illicit financial flows across Iran’s land borders and through the Caspian Sea. “The establishment of the Iron Gate Task Force builds on the achievements of our rigorous naval blockade against Iran,” said Cooper. “By strengthening cooperation between Centcom and other US government agencies, we will further limit Iran’s ability to fund terrorism, rebuild weapons factories and resupply its military apparatus.”
