Pentagon aims at mass production of attack drone used in war with Iran
The Pentagon is planning to mass-produce single-useLUCAS attack drones, already employed by US forces in the current war in the Middle East, after having been developed by reverse-engineering the cheap and lethal Iranian Shahed system.
The LUCAS drone - an acronym for Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System - is the US version of the Iranian kamikaze drone and is manufactured by the American company SpektreWorks. US orders diplomatic posts around the world to review security measures
The Department of State has orderedall US diplomatic posts around the world to initiate "immediate" security assessments in light of the "ongoing and evolving situation in the Middle East and the potential risk of cascading effects". This is what is contained in a cable viewed by the Washington Post. The document bears the signature of Secretary of State Marco Rubio and specifies that the order came from Under Secretary for Management, Jason Evans. Baghdad asks Tehran for transit from Hormuz for its oil tankers
Iraq is in contact with Iran to try to arrange the passage of some of its oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. The Iraqi oil minister told local media. A founding member of Opec, Iraq derives 90% of its budget revenue from the sale of crude oil. Before the outbreak of war on 28 February, Iraq exported its oil - about 3.5 million barrels per day - mainly from the southern Basra fields through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has closed the Strait, through which up to one-fifth of globally produced crude oil and liquefied natural gas normally passes, to ships from most countries. "Contacts are underway with the relevant authorities to allow some oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz so that we can resume our exports," Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdel Ghani told local television station al-Sharqiya, referring to the Iranian ships. 'We have to provide them with the identity of these ships, their name, their affiliation, who owns them,' he added.

In his speech, Zelensky also spoke of the growing war use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), warning that 'enemies' already use it, that in the future this technology will give rise to even more 'bloody' weapons, and encouraging Western leaders to invest more in the military industry, technology, and weapons innovation. And he put on the table the tried and tested 'products' that a country at war like his can offer the market. To finally reveal that he had given 'His Majesty King Charles III an iPad'. "We must act now so that the next generations can say that today's leaders acted when it mattered to do so, to ensure that people can live safely in the future," he proclaimed, adding: "If Vladimir Putin had been stopped in 2022, we would not have to defend ourselves against Shahed drones today.

"I am not surprised by their behaviour, as I have always considered Nato - on which we spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year to protect these very countries - as a one-way street: we protect them, but they do nothing for us, especially in times of need," he wrote. "Fortunately, we annihilated Iran's armed forces." Kallas: 'US and Israel stop war, it would be in everyone's interest'
It is "absolutely" time for the US and Israel to end the war in Iran, as "it would be in everyone's interest if this war stopped". These were the words of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas in an interview with Reuters relayed by the international media, emphasising that "the problem with wars is that it is easier to start them than to stop them and they always get out of hand". The EU does not understand some of the US's actions under Donald Trump or its goals in Iran, but it has become accustomed to its unpredictability and is "calmer" in its responses, he added. "The main concern of European countries is that we were not consulted before starting this war, in fact the opposite happened. Many Europeans were trying to convince the US and Israel not to start it," Kallas explained, emphasising that the EU was willing to help "diplomatically to bring the parties together to really stop this war". The European institutions have "consulted countries in the region such as those in the Gulf, Jordan, Egypt, to see if we could also make proposals for Iran, Israel and the United States to get out of this situation so that everyone can save face," he added. On the EU side, "no one is ready to put their people at risk in the Strait of Hormuz," the High Representative emphasised. "We have to find diplomatic ways to keep it open, so that we can avoid a food, fertiliser and energy crisis in the world". Her proposal is to replicate the UN-brokered agreement allowing Ukraine to export grain, food and fertiliser through the Black Sea without civilian ships being attacked by Russia, an idea she discussed with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

UN: 'War in Iran could bring 45 million people to levels of acute hunger'
Some 45 million people could face acute levels of hunger if the war in Iran does not end by mid-year. This was revealed in an analysis by the UN World Food Programme (WFP). Those affected by hunger would add to the other 318 million worldwide who already face acute food insecurity - meaning they are unable to get enough food and their lives or livelihoods are at risk. 'If the conflict continues, it will unleash shockwaves around the world, and families who already cannot afford their next meal will be hardest hit,' said Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the WFP. "Without an adequately funded humanitarian response, it could mean catastrophe for millions of people already on the brink," he added. Iran's near-blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted food shipments from logistics centres in Dubai, and ships face huge detours and rising costs due to high oil prices. The conflict is having repercussions worldwide, with the world's 'most vulnerable people' most exposed to its knock-on effects, the agency said. The crisis is exacerbated by recent drastic cuts in humanitarian aid budgets by the US and other governments. In 2025, the WFP had 40 per cent less funding than in the previous year, forcing the agency to reduce rations for severely malnourished children. Skau also referred to the situation in Afghanistan, where now only one in four affected children can be assisted.

"We haven't seen anything from Mojtaba yet, wouldn't you like to see him too, minister? He can continue to hide, but why not show himself? He is becoming a bit of an embarrassment for the regime." This was stated by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar at a joint press conference with Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, referring to Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and Iran's new Supreme Leader. According to Sa'ar, "Iranians are safer" now that Larijani and Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani have been killed by the Israeli army. As for Larijani, "the US had a $10 million bounty on him, but we did it for free," he adds. 'They massacred,' adds Sa'ar, 'tens of thousands of their fellow citizens. Oil tanker hit by missile debris in the Emirates, minor damage
An oil tanker anchored off the east coast of the United Arab Emirates was hit by debris from an intercepted missile in the early hours of this morning, while the country was undergoing several waves of Iranian attacks. The UK Maritime Operations Centre (Ukmto), run by the British Armed Forces, reported the incident, stating that the ship was in the Gulf of Oman, off Fujairah. According to the centre, the tanker sustained 'minor structural damage' and no one was injured. The Ukmto later clarified that it was debris falling from a missile intercepted by the defence system that hit the tanker and not that the tanker itself had been targeted. Since the beginning of the war with Iran, some 20 ships in the region have been attacked, as Iranian bombardments effectively block traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passage in the Persian Gulf through which 20% of globally traded oil and natural gas passes.

Hormuz crisis, Japan and US strengthen dialogue on energy security
- Japan and the US agree to maintain a "close and constant" channel of communication to deal with the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, where the blockade decided by Iran threatens global energy security. This was agreed by Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a telephone communication, the first direct contact between the two diplomats since the start of US and Israeli military operations against Tehran last month. The conversation took place ahead of a bilateral summit scheduled for Thursday in Washington between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and President Donald Trump. During the discussion, Motegi reiterated that the safety of shipping in the strait is of "critical importance to the international community and Japan", with Tokyo dependent on the Middle East for more than 90 per cent of its crude oil imports. Diplomatic sources quoted by the Kyodo Agency say that no specific formal request was made to Japan during the talks; however, Motegi assured that Tokyo will continue to make "all possible diplomatic efforts" in cooperation with the international community and the United States. The issue remains sensitive for the Japanese executive due to constitutional constraints limiting the deployment of the Self-Defence Forces (SDF) abroad in combat scenarios, although the possibility of limited naval escorts for Japan-bound ships is foreseen. Minister Motegi also held separate telephone talks with his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, and the Sheikh of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to affirm cooperation in de-escalation and ensure the stability of crude oil supplies, as well as the safety of Japanese citizens in the region.
