Iran: Shah's nephew, Israel aims at regime head to overthrow him
"At the moment, Iran's ability to retaliate is extremely limited. Its so-called 'Axis of Resistance' is severely weakened, depriving Tehran of the asymmetric shield it once relied on to confront Israel indirectly. Its ballistic missile arsenal has proven ineffective, while Israeli counterattacks have exposed the strength of Israel's missile defence and exposed the Revolutionary Guard's inability to protect Iranian territory'. Pierre Pahlavi, a professor at the Canadian Forces College, defence advisor to the Canadian government and grandson of the Shah of Persia, tells LaPresse, commenting on the situation in the Middle East after the Israeli attack on Iran. 'Attacking Western targets, especially American ones, would be suicidal for the Islamic regime, as it would risk triggering direct US military support for Israel's campaign,' he notes. 'Although Trump remains reluctant to enter another war, such a move could change the calculus overnight. 'In short: Iran's options are shrinking. The regime is exhausted, under immense pressure and slowly heading for collapse,' the Iran expert professor points out.
- "As Israeli military officials have stated, this is only the first phase of an operation clearly designed to severely cripple the Islamic regime. With Operation Rising Lion, Israel appears to be intensifying its strategy, applying to Iran what it has already done to Hamas, Hezbollah, and Syria since October 2023. The long-term goal? Nothing less than regime change,' Pahlavi declares. 'The Western powers, in particular the United States, support this strategy only half-heartedly,' he continues. 'Under the Trump administration, Israeli threats of attack have been widely used as a cheap bargaining chip in nuclear negotiations with Tehran, with the aim of gaining concessions through sloppy diplomacy,' adds the Iranian-born professor. 'This time, however, Israel seems to be aiming at the head of the so-called Iranian octopus, after months of trying to strike at and weaken its tentacles, namely Tehran's regional proxies (a metaphor for the IDF).
