Who is Mojtaba, Khamenei's second son and new Supreme Guide
He had been left for dead, along with his father, in the Israeli-American air raid that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday. Instead, Mojtaba Khamenei, 56 and Khamenei's second son, was chosen as the new Supreme Guide by the Assembly of Experts. Which, having gathered to vote online after the raid against the Qom headquarters, opted for Mojtaba Khamenei, also yielding to pressure from the Pasdaran. Yet it was precisely the father-son succession that had initially made him an unlikely candidate in a revolutionary context such as the Iranian one, born from the overthrow of the Shah's monarchy. Ayatollah Khamenei himself, during his lifetime, had said he was disinclined to support a dynastic succession. Although lacking his father's charisma, Mojtaba Khamenei is, however, known to wield considerable influence behind the scenes and to have strong ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its paramilitary force Basij. Moreover, he was considered the most likely candidate to retain control of the financial network built by his father.
Mojtaba Khamenei, according to Bloomberg sources, has allegedly built a global real estate empire worth over £100 million in the UK alone. The funds came mainly from Iranian oil sales and were routed through accounts in British, Swiss, Liechtenstein and United Arab Emirates banks, through shell companies registered in St Kitts and Nevis and the Isle of Man. Among the most well-documented structures is a villa on The Bishops Avenue in London - the so-called 'Billionaire's Row' - purchased in 2014 for £33.7 million. The portfolio extends to luxury hotels in Frankfurt and Majorca, a villa in the 'Beverly Hills of Dubai' and assets previously held in Toronto and Paris. None of these assets are in Mojtaba's direct name: his name does not appear on any documents, replaced by trusted intermediaries and Chinese boxes. The key man identified by Bloomberg is Iranian banker Ali Ansari, sanctioned by the British government in October 2025 for funding the Guardians of the Revolution. The US Treasury Department sanctioned Mojtaba back in 2019, but the sanctions have not stopped the empire from expanding, exploiting loopholes in the systems of transparency on beneficial ownership of assets in many Western jurisdictions.

The Israeli army claimed to have hit a 'secret' underground complex in Minzadehei, northeast of Tehran, where, according to the IDF, Iranian scientists were in the process of developing the 'necessary capabilities' for nuclear weapons. The IDF believes that the Iranians started using this site after Israel damaged important Iranian nuclear sites in the 12-day war in June. "Israeli intelligence continued to track the activities of the scientists and located their new location at this site," thus enabling ''a precise attack on the secret underground complex," the Israeli military said. The IDF added that the attack eliminates a key component of Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons.

Trump-Merz at White House, attacks on Spain and UK as war goes on
It was a long-planned meeting between Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz this Tuesday at the White House. However, this face-to-face - the US president's first with a foreign leader since the beginning of the Israeli-American war against Iran - took on a completely new value, ending up being dominated by discussions about attacks. It should be noted that the German government only received what amounted to a courtesy call shortly before the American and Israeli forces launched their operation, while, in general, the European allies were left in the dark about Washington's intentions until last Saturday. "We are on the same page with regard to the elimination of this terrible regime in Tehran," Merz said in the Oval Office. "We all hope that this war will end as soon as possible," he added. "So, let's hope that the Israeli military and the American military are doing the right thing to end this and to have, really, a new government in place, returning to peace and freedom." According to Merz, the need is one: to develop a strategy for the entire Middle East region. 'We are very interested in a common approach, in working together and what we can do. And this is important, not only for the Americans. It is extremely important for Europe and extremely important for Israel and its security. So we are looking forward to finding ways to deal with the next day."
Trump, for his part, said he made the decision to go to war to prevent Iranian attacks. "We were negotiating with these lunatics, and I thought they were going to attack us," he said. "They were going to attack us if we didn't." At the same time, the US president - speaking to reporters - assured that Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not force him to join the campaign against Tehran. "No, maybe I forced their hand," Trump said. 'At most, maybe I forced Israel's hand, but Israel was ready, and we were ready, and we had a very, very powerful impact,' he repeated shortly afterwards. A statement that contrasts with what Secretary of State Marco Rubio told congressional lawmakers this Monday, explaining that the US faced an imminent threat as Israel was about to attack Iran and that Iran was ready to retaliate against US forces. In his first face-to-face with reporters in which he answered their questions since the start of the war, Trump explained that "almost everything has been destroyed" in the country. "They don't have a navy. It's been knocked out. They don't have an air force. It's been knocked out. They don't have air detection, it's been knocked out. Their radar has been knocked out. And practically everything has been knocked out." Asked about the possible worst-case scenario of the conflict, Trump was very blunt: "I guess the worst case would be, after doing this, then someone takes power who is just as bad as the previous leader, right?" And when asked who he would like to see take power, he gave a blunt answer: 'Today there was another blow to the new leadership and it looks like it was pretty substantial. Most of the people we had in mind are dead,' the American reiterated.
As for a possible transfer of power in Iran, Trump downplayed the possibility that exiled Iranian activist Reza Pahlavi - son of the last Shah of Iran - could take over the country's leadership, saying he would prefer someone from inside Iran to take charge. "Some people like that, and we haven't given it much thought," Trump said. "It seems to me that someone from the inside would perhaps be more appropriate." Trump used the Oval Office meeting to praise the help of some Nato nations like Germany: "We're not asking them to put boots on the ground." And to criticise the position of countries such as the UK: Keir Starmer's government has stated that it does not want to participate actively in the conflict, but only defensively, without allowing the US to use one of its bases on Diego Garcia Island, located in the Indian Ocean's Chagos archipelago. "The UK has been very, very uncooperative with that stupid island that they have ceded and leased for 100 years, perhaps due to the fact that the natives claim the island without ever having seen it before. What is all this? And they ruin relationships. It's a shame." "We are not dealing with Winston Churchill," he added. In particular, Trump harshly criticised Spain, described by the American as terrible for not allowing the US to use its bases for attacks and not wanting to increase its military spending within the Transatlantic Alliance to 5 per cent. "We could use their bases if we wanted to. We could just fly there and use them. Nobody will tell us not to use them. But we don't have to. But they have been hostile," he said. So much so that Trump ordered Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to sever all relations with the country. "Spain has absolutely nothing we need, except great people. They have great people, but they don't have great leadership," the Republican said. "We will stop all trade with Spain. We want nothing to do with Spain.

Israel: 'Eliminated' in Tehran Pasdaran commander for Lebanon
The Israeli army announced it had 'eliminated' the commander of the Lebanon Corps of the Quds Force of the Guardians of the Revolution, Daoud Ali Zadeh, in an attack in Tehran.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for an end to the war in Iran "as soon as possible", underlining the direct impact of the conflict on energy markets and the European economy. Speaking at the White House, where he was received by US President Donald Trump, Merz explained that the escalation triggered by the Israeli and US raids is having repercussions on energy commodity prices, with knock-on effects on international and European economies. Starting with Germany, which is highly exposed to the dynamics of oil and gas.
"It is obvious that this is hurting our economies. It applies to oil prices and gas prices," explained the Chancellor, who then hoped "that the Israeli-American armies will take the necessary measures to put an end to this situation and establish a new government that will restore peace and freedom".
"We are supporting the United States and Israel to get rid of this terrible terrorist regime," he emphasised, talking about how to deal with the "day after" the war and how to restore security in the area "through joint work".

Wsj: Trump opens up support for armed groups to overthrow regime
US President Donald Trump has opened up the possibility of supporting armed groups in Iran willing to overthrow the regime. This was reported by US sources to the Wall Street Journal, according to which the idea could turn some Iranian factions into forces on the ground at least symbolically supported by Washington.
Trump spoke with Kurdish leaders on Sunday and continues to interface with other local representatives who could use Tehran's weakness to their advantage. The Kurds have significant forces along the Iraq-Iran border, while Israel has bombed positions in Iran's southwest, fuelling speculation about a possible Kurdish advance.
"President Trump has spoken with many regional partners," White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said, without explicitly confirming the president's goals. Officials pointed out that Trump has not yet made a final decision on support, including sending weapons, training or informational support to anti-regime groups. Announcing the start of US and Israeli raids in Iran, Trump had urged the Iranian people to "take control of their government", assuring them that "America supports you with overwhelming force and devastating power".

Iran media: 'Khamenei's son is in full health and examining important issues'
The Iranian news agency Mehr says that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Iran's late Supreme Guide is still alive. "Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the Supreme Guide, is in full health," Mehr said, adding that Mojtaba, long considered by some analysts to be a potential successor, is also examining "important issues" relating to the country, without giving details. Mojtaba is widely recognised, writes CNN, as a man who wields influence behind the scenes, with deep ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Iran's most powerful military force, as well as to the Basij, its paramilitary network of volunteers. However, any move towards a succession from father to son would clash with Iran's political and religious sensibilities. A dynastic-style transfer of power is frowned upon in the Shia clerical tradition, especially in a system born out of a revolution that overthrew a monarchy. There are also practical obstacles: Mojtaba is not a high-ranking cleric and does not hold any official government office. He was sanctioned by the United States in 2019.

Iran: Gulf countries without 'Made in USA' interceptors within a week
Crucial to the outcome of the ongoing conflict is the amount of latest-generation US-made interceptors remaining in the Gulf countries' arsenals and the amount of missiles and attack drones in Iran's arsenals, writes the Wall Street Journal after the allied countries sent reinforcements to the region. Italia is currently considering whether to send a Samp-T system to the United Arab Emirates or Kuwait. According to the American newspaper, at the current rate of use, the time when the Gulf countries will run out of their supplies 'could come very soon'. "No more than another week, probably a couple of days at most," explained Fabian Hoffmann, a missile expert at the University of Oslo. The other part of the equation is the rate of destruction by Israeli and US forces of the projectiles and Tehran's launch capability. The United Arab Emirates alone reported that from Saturday morning to Monday evening it was the target of 174 Iranian ballistic missiles, eight cruise missiles, and 689 drones. The country, however, was not hit by any missiles and only 44 drones. Precisely thanks to the sophisticated American radars and interceptors. Bahrain reported the arrival of 70 ballistic missiles.

Trump: we have virtually 'unlimited' ammunition
US stockpiles of medium- and large-calibre ammunition are 'virtually unlimited', thanks to which Washington could fight 'forever'. This was stated by US President Donald Trump in a message posted on Truth Social. "The United States' stockpile of ammunition, in the mid- to upper-mid-range, has never been higher or in better condition. I was told today that we have a virtually unlimited supply of these weapons. Wars can be fought 'forever', and with great success, using only this stockpile,' Trump wrote, adding that for the higher tier systems the US has good reserves but not yet at the desired level. The president also said that additional high-potential weaponry would be stockpiled in foreign countries. No quantitative details on the cited stockpiles were given.

US Embassy in Riyadh hit by two Iranian drones
The US Embassy in Riyadh was hit by two drones, according to an initial assessment by the Saudi Defence Ministry. Authorities reported 'limited fire and minor material damage' to the building. The New York Times writes this today.
The embassy issued a security alert urging US citizens in the kingdom to stay indoors and avoid the diplomatic compound area, extending the recommendation to the cities of Jeddah, Riyadh and Dhahran. Washington also restricted non-essential travel to military installations in the region.
The incident is part of the regional escalation following the joint US and Israeli attacks on Iran that began on Saturday and the subsequent Iranian retaliation against US and Israeli bases and interests in the Gulf. According to official sources quoted in the media, most of the Iranian missiles and drones launched against the Gulf states have been intercepted.
