The Israeli army (IDF) announced that it has launched a new ground offensive east of Gaza City, to expand the security zone it has established within the Palestinian territory.

"In the last few hours, troops began conducting ground activities in the Shejaiya area in northern Gaza in order to expand the security zone," the army said in a statement.

The note goes on to report that "troops eliminated numerous terrorists and dismantled Hamas terrorist infrastructure, including a command and control centre that served Hamas terrorists to plan and launch terrorist attacks".

Supply of rifles to Israel

The Trump administration went ahead with the sale of more than 20,000 US-made assault rifles to Israel last month, according to a document viewed by Reuters and a source familiar with the matter, carrying out a sale that former President Joe Biden's administration delayed for fear they might be used by extremist Israeli settlers.

The State Department sent a notification to Congress on 6 March of the $24 million sale of Colt Carbine 5.56 mm calibre fully automatic rifles, stating that the end user would be the Israeli National Police, according to the document.

The sale of the rifles is a small transaction compared to the billions of dollars of arms Washington supplies to Israel. But it attracted attention when the Biden administration delayed the sale for fear that the weapons might end up in the hands of Israeli settlers, some of whom have attacked Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The Biden administration had imposed sanctions on individuals and entities accused of committing violence in the West Bank, where there has been an increase in settler attacks against Palestinians.

On his first day in office, 20 January, Trump issued an executive order lifting sanctions on settlers, in a reversal of US policy. Since then, his administration has approved billions of dollars worth of arms sales to Israel.

The congressional notification of 6 March stated that the US government had taken into account 'political, military, economic, human rights and arms control considerations'.

The State Department made no statement when asked if the administration had sought assurances from Israel on the use of the weapons.
