Inflation, Istat: +1.1% in April, +2.7% year-on-year
Inflation is mainly supported by tensions in energy prices (from -2.1% to +9.2%) and unprocessed food (from +4.7% to +5.9%)
Nel April 2026, Istat clarifies, the national consumer price index for the entire collectivity (NIC), before tobacco products, recorded a change of +1.1% on a monthly basis and +2.7% on an annual basis (from +1.7% in March); the preliminary estimate was +2.8%.
Inflation is essentially sustained by tensions in the prices of energy products (from -2.1% to +9.2%) and unprocessed foodstuffs (from +4.7% to +5.9%). A partial dampening effect on inflation growth is due to the dynamics of the prices of some types of services, including recreational, cultural and personal care services (from +3.0% to +2.6%). Year-on-year price growth in the 'shopping trolley' rose to +2.3% (from +2.2%), while core inflation fell to +1.6% (from +1.9%). April's inflation assumption for 2026 is +2.3%.
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) shows a change of +1.6 % on a monthly basis, due to the end of seasonal balances, which the NIC does not take into account, and +2.8 % on an annual basis (from +1.6 % in the previous month); the preliminary estimate was +2.9 %.
The national consumer price index for blue- and white-collar households (FOI), net of tobacco, shows an economic change of +1.0% and a trend change of +2.6%.
