Labour, in July in Italy +0.9% more employed than a year ago. Unemployment falls to 6%

In July 2025, on a monthly basis, the growth of employed and inactive persons is associated with the decline of the unemployed. This was announced by ISTAT, pointing out that the increase in the employed (+0.1%, equal to +13,000) involves men, employees (permanent and fixed-term), 15-24 year-olds and 35-49 year-olds; the employed, on the other hand, decrease among women, the self-employed and in the other age groups. The employment rate rose to 62.8% (+0.1 points).
The decrease in the number of jobseekers (-4.6% or -74 thousand) concerns both gender components and is spread across all age groups. The unemployment rate dropped to 6.0% (-0.3 points), the youth unemployment rate to 18.7% (-1.4 points).

"In July 2025," reads the ISTAT commentary, "the number of employed people, at 24 million 217 thousand, is up on the previous month. Permanent employees (16 million 448 thousand) and fixed-term employees (2 million 567 thousand) increased, while self-employed persons (5 million 202 thousand) decreased. Employment also grew compared to July 2024 (+218 thousand employed in one year), due to the increase in permanent employees (+351 thousand) and the self-employed (+55 thousand) and the decrease in fixed-term employees (-188 thousand)".
According to the data released today, the growth in the number of inactive persons between 15 and 64 years of age (+0.2%, or +30,000) affects women, 25-34 year-olds and those aged 50 and over; among men, 15-24 year-olds and 35-49 year-olds, the number of inactive persons is instead decreasing. The inactivity rate rose to 33.2% (+0.1 points).
Also comparing the May-July 2025 quarter with the previous one (February-April 2025), an increase in the number of employed persons is observed (+0.2%, equal to +51 thousand units). Compared to the previous quarter, there is also an increase in the number of jobseekers (+1.8%, equal to +28 thousand units) and a decrease in the number of inactive persons aged 15-64 (-0.5%, equal to -67 thousand units).
