Trade balance: Istat reports surplus rises to 8.2 billion in July
Exports up 4.7 per cent year-on-year, imports up 4.6 per cent
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - In July, Italy’s trade balance recorded a surplus of 8.24 billion euros, up from 7.829 billion a year ago. This is according to Istat, which notes that the energy deficit (-5.515 billion) is higher than a year earlier (-4.117 billion). The surplus in trade in non-energy products rose from +11.947 billion in July 2025 to +13.756 billion in July 2026.
Exports rose in July by 4.7 per cent year-on-year in value terms (-1.7 per cent in volume terms) and by 0.3 per cent month-on-month. Imports rose by 4.6 per cent year-on-year in value (-2.7 per cent in volume) and fell by 1.2 per cent month-on-month.
In the first seven months of 2026, exports recorded year-on-year growth of 4.6 per cent, driven primarily by higher sales of base metals and metal products, excluding machinery and plant (+26.4 per cent), coke and refined petroleum products (+24.0 per cent) and motor vehicles (+8.0 per cent).
