Istat: Unemployment rises to 6.2 per cent in August
Compared with last year, the number of jobseekers has risen, whilst the number of people not in employment, education or training aged between 15 and 64 has fallen
In August, the unemployment rate rose to 6.2 per cent (+0.2 percentage points) and the youth unemployment rate to 20.3 per cent (+0.6 percentage points). The rise in the number of jobseekers (+3.1 per cent, equivalent to +48,000 people) affects men, women and all age groups. This is the preliminary estimate released by Istat.
The decline in the number of economically inactive people aged between 15 and 64 (-0.2 per cent, equivalent to -21,000) applies to men and all age groups except those aged 35–49, among whom the figure is rising; among women, however, inactivity remains broadly stable. The inactivity rate fell to 32.7 per cent (-0.1 percentage points).
Compared with August 2025, the number of jobseekers has risen (+8.8 per cent, or +129,000) whilst the number of economically inactive people aged between 15 and 64 has fallen (-3 per cent, or -381,000).
