Hamas leader dead
Hamas announced the death of its leader following an Israeli raid against his residence in Tehran. Haniyeh had been head of the Hamas political bureau since 2017. He was also prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority from 2006 to 2007 and head of the administration of the Gaza Strip from 2014 to 2017. A bodyguard was also killed with him. Haniyeh's funeral will be held tomorrow, Thursday 1 August, in the Iranian capital.
Haniyeh was killed in the room where he was staying in Tehran by a rocket, said Hamas spokesman and number two, Khalil al-Hayya. Earlier, Iranian and Saudi state media had reported that Haniyeh was killed by a ''guided missile''.
Hamas: 'Cowardly act, will not go unanswered'
"The assassination of commander Ismail Haniyeh is a cowardly act that will not go unanswered," said Musa Abou Marzouk, a top Hamas leader. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards said they are "investigating the incident of the death of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh .
Hezbollah's number two also hit
In the same hours and three days after the massacre of Druze children in Majdal Shams in the northern Golan, Israeli retaliation against Hezbollah also arrived. A powerful explosion hit the stronghold of the pro-Iranian Shiite militiamen in Beirut in the evening. The attack targeted the Shura Council of Hezbollah as well as the operations room of the military arm of the Party of God and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
