Italgas: Dell’Orco says we’re aiming for 16 wins by the end of the year
‘There is certainly a buzz of excitement’
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - “There is undoubtedly a lot of activity in the gas tender market; many tenders have been published. Italgas has been awarded 12 of them, and we expect to reach 16 by the end of the year. We anticipate a further twenty or so tenders, including those already published and those due to be published between this year and next. This would bring the total to around forty tenders, but out of 170 to be launched: so things have started to move, but we are still in the middle of the process.” So said Pier Lorenzo Dell’Orco, CEO of Italgas Reti, at the Italian Energy Summit organised by Il Sole 24 Ore. According to the top executive, in general terms, ‘a strong push is still needed to unblock and relaunch the tenders, particularly directed at the contracting authorities responsible for processing them’. Moving on to the energy system, Dell’Orco emphasised that “the data show that gas demand for residential and industrial end-uses remains robust; in fact, it is growing slightly year-on-year. In the industrial sector, there are high-temperature thermal processes for which there is no sustainable alternative. On the residential front, consumption is mainly concentrated on domestic heating, for which the only alternative is heat pumps – subject to building regulations. The electric solution, therefore, is not widely applicable. And gas is set to play a fundamental role in meeting the community’s energy needs. We must therefore continue to invest in the networks. We must focus on domestic production, starting with biomethane – a locally sourced, zero-kilometre gas that can be fed into the network without the need for infrastructure upgrades.’
