Sales of Italian wine in the United States have more than doubled in value over the last two decades with an increase of 148%, and in 2024 could reach almost EUR 1.9 billion, an all-time high.
This was confirmed by an analysis by Coldiretti based on Istat data, released on the occasion of the inauguration of Vinitaly USA in Chicago, attended by National President Ettore Prandini and CEO of Filiera Italia Luigi Scordamaglia. The USA is the top world consumer of wine with 33.3 million hectolitres, according to Coldiretti analysis based on OIV data, and for Italy represents the most important market in terms of value.
But Italy is also the main supplier to the United States by volume, with about 450 million bottles sold. Approximately one quarter is prosecco, which is the most popular among American consumers, although more and more 'labels' from the different regions have gained notoriety among the stars and stripes.
"Our presence at Vinitaly Chicago is part of the initiatives that Coldiretti is carrying out to promote Italian wine starting with the communication of its values," explained Prandini. "Wine, vineyards and wine growers bring with them art, history, culture, traditions, conviviality, territories, landscapes, biodiversity, environmental protection and wine tourism. A heritage to be defended on all markets, for which we hope for active support also from Europe'. "The objective is to establish a permanent communication channel to inform and educate American consumers on why Italian wine is so different from other products in the world," Scordamaglia added, "thanks to its great diversity in variety, environmental variability, and millennia of culture and tradition, as well as absolutely sustainable production techniques.
