Jaecoo 8 Shs-P, how the Chinese 7-seater plug-in hybrid SUV goes
It mounts the 428-horsepower super hybrid technology and impresses with its price/performance ratio.
More than four metres and eighty feet in length, a cabin that can seat up to seven, 428 horsepower and a plug-in hybrid engine with low consumption even when the battery is flat. These are the main ingredients of the Jaecoo 8 Shs-P, an acronym that identifies the super hybrid technology of the Chinese brand of the Chery Group in its maximum power expression. All this combined with full optional equipment and a decidedly competitive price, a combination that has become a constant for most Chinese brands present in Italia.
New Jaecoo 8, dimensions and interior
The Jaecoo 8 measures 482 cm in length, 193 cm in width and 171 cm in height, with a 282 cm wheelbase and seven-seat configuration. Inside, the dashboard is organised on horizontal lines with dual 12.3-inch displays, one for instrumentation and one for infotainment and on-board functions. Equipment includes head-up display, 14-speaker Sony audio system, front and rear USB connectivity and 12 V sockets, charging plate, plus ventilated, heated front seats with massage function and Nappa leather upholstery. Safety is provided by a package of 19 Adas and 10 airbags with driver assistance systems with adaptive cruise control and active lane keeping. The cabin also features soundproof windows, multi-zone climate and a panoramic roof. The luggage compartment starts at 200 litres with three rows in use and reaches 2021 litres when the seats are folded down, with an intermediate configuration of 738 litres.
Jaecoo 8 SHS-P super hybrid, how it works and how it goes
The Shs-P system fitted to the Jaecoo 8 sees the combination of the 143 horsepower 1.5-litre Miller cycle combustion engine combined with two electric motors at the front and one at the rear to provide all-wheel drive. System output is 428 horsepower with 580 Nm of torque, a 0-100 km/h sprint covered in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h. The 34.46 kW battery (among the largest among plug-in SUVs) guarantees an electric range of 134 km and over 1,100 km thanks to the 70-litre petrol tank. The battery can be recharged in alternating current up to 6.6 kWh and up to 70 kWh in direct current. Declared fuel consumption is low, with 2.2 litres in the weighted Wlpt cycle and 7.7 litres per 100 km with an empty battery. Figures that we also found during our first contact, which took place under a real downpour that made it difficult, in certain situations, to ground the power.
