Jannik Sinner and Italia tennis: 'We are a beautiful team'
After his victory over Andrey Rublev, the world number one comments on the semi-final berth of two Italians at the Foro Italico and looks ahead to Paris
The awareness of his strength ('I never imagined I would reach the level I have reached now as a player. When I was younger, I did not expect to reach such high goals in tennis') and also of the golden moment of Italia tennis ('We are lucky, because we have so many players in the top 20 in the world. We are a beautiful team'): after the victory against Andrey Rublev, Jannik Sinner calmly answers questions at the press conference, as always. Tomorrow it will be the turn of the two semifinals, with two Italians like last year: next to him is Luciano Darderi (in 2025 there was Lorenzo Musetti), who will play with Casper Ruud, after the epic match he won with Rafa Jodar. "I don't know him very well, we trained in Dubai, we played against each other in Australia. Tennis is continuing to bring out new phenomena: then it's clear that you get stronger but also potential opponents. I have a good relationship with everyone, everyone is different."
Sinner is increasingly consolidating his game on clay, he arrived in Rome having won in Monte Carlo and Madrid. "Also physically I am getting stronger and I feel this helps a lot on a surface that tends to make you play more. Rome is the first 'real' clay tournament: here you can see the level you have reached, and then you go to Paris,' he commented. In the match against Rublev, the world number one showed some signs of fatigue - he has not stopped since Indian Wells - made clear over the microphone with Diego Nargiso, then added that "for me it's fine whether I win or lose. I will have time to recover for Roland Garros, which is my goal this year'. Meanwhile, the last quarterfinal was played between Daniil Medvedev and the 19-year-old Spaniard Martin Landaluce: the Russian prevailed in the third set after a hard-fought match. It will be him, therefore, to challenge Jannik: it is the 17th time they have clashed and in the last ten Medvedev has won only one match (in the quarters at Wimbledon 2024)
