US President Donald Trump concluded one of the most eagerly awaited stops on his Asian tour in Tokyo, receiving a triumphant welcome from Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The leader, the first woman to lead Japan, praised Trump as "a man of peace" and announced her intention to put him forward for the Nobel Prize, speaking of a "new golden age of the Japanese-American alliance". During the meeting, the two governments signed an agreement to "strengthen the security and resilience of critical minerals and rare earths supply chains" in response to recent restrictions imposed by Beijing.
Trump, who called Takaichi 'one of the greatest prime ministers', reiterated that 'Washington is an ally of the highest level'.
After the summit at the Akasaka Palace, the president met with the families of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea decades ago, assuring them that 'the United States stands fully behind them'.
Trump's visit to Japan is part of a diplomatic mission aimed at a trade agreement with China.
