Jasmine Paolini wins the Internazionali d'Italia. In front of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and the Minister for Sport and Youths Andrea Abodi, the Italian tennis player - who from Monday will be the new number 4 in the Wta ranking - dominated the final against the American Coco Gauff, with a break in the opening of both sets making it clear that she was on a good day. The last Italian to win had been Raffaella Reggi in 1985. Paolini is the fourth Italian ever to triumph in Rome.

"It's an unforgettable day, very good": this is how the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, congratulated Jasmine Paolini.

The first partial ended 6:4, the second 6:2, with a series of points of absolute quality by the Italian and errors, especially with the forehand, by the powerful American who suffered the variety of Paolini's game.

In the second partial, played at times under a light rain (while waiting for the works that should finally lead to the coverage of the Central, as the president of Sport and Health Marco Mezzaroma has just announced), Gauff went out of the match also mentally, with a countless series of double faults (in the end they will be 7), and giving up twice consecutive the service at the opening. Paolini took a 3-0 lead and then 4-1 (dropping only once, but immediately breaking again), extinguishing Gauff's feeble hopes of a comeback. Paolini gave an essay of defence and counter-attack with ever-changing strokes that annihilated the American.

Paolini had never won two matches in a row before this year and had already rewritten the history of Italian tennis by becoming the first Italian to reach the singles final since 2014, the year in which her doubles partner Sara Errani played for the title (losing in the final to Serena Williams).

The success in the final was paradoxically even easier than the semi-final played against the other American Peyton Stearns, a match in which Paolini had gone down by a break and had often been behind in the score.

It was a magical year and a half for Paolini, who was ranked number 29 at the beginning of 2024. By the end of October, she had already reached fourth place after having won two finals in a row, at Roland Garros and Wimbledon (losing them) and having played the Billie Jean King Cup and the Olympics as the absolute star, with the gold medal paired with Sara Errani, a first ever for Italian tennis.

Paolini returns to the court on Sunday at 12 noon on the Foro Italico Central Court to play the women's doubles final paired with Errani. The Azzurri, who defeated the Russians Diana Shnaider and Mirra Andreeva in the semifinals, as they did in the final in Paris 2024, will face the Belgian-Russian duo of Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova.

The baton then passes to Jannik Sinner, who from 5 p.m. meets Carlos Alcaraz in the men's tournament final.

Finally, an eye to the prize money. With the victory and the Wta points that will allow her to return to her world best ranking, Paolini gets a cheque for 877,390 euros. An additional 200,000 euros are up for grabs for winning the doubles.
