Jasmine Paolini wins the Internazionali d'Italia. In front of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and the Minister for Sport and Youths Andrea Abodi, the Italian tennis player - who from Monday will be the new number 4 in the Wta ranking - dominated the final against the American Coco Gauff, with a break in the opening of both sets making it clear that she was on a good day. The last Italian to win had been Raffaella Reggi in 1985. Paolini is the fourth Italian ever to triumph in Rome.
"It's an unforgettable day, very good": this is how the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, congratulated Jasmine Paolini.
The first partial ended 6:4, the second 6:2, with a series of points of absolute quality by the Italian and errors, especially with the forehand, by the powerful American who suffered the variety of Paolini's game.
In the second partial, played at times under a light rain (while waiting for the works that should finally lead to the coverage of the Central, as the president of Sport and Health Marco Mezzaroma has just announced), Gauff went out of the match also mentally, with a countless series of double faults (in the end they will be 7), and giving up twice consecutive the service at the opening. Paolini took a 3-0 lead and then 4-1 (dropping only once, but immediately breaking again), extinguishing Gauff's feeble hopes of a comeback. Paolini gave an essay of defence and counter-attack with ever-changing strokes that annihilated the American.
Paolini had never won two matches in a row before this year and had already rewritten the history of Italian tennis by becoming the first Italian to reach the singles final since 2014, the year in which her doubles partner Sara Errani played for the title (losing in the final to Serena Williams).
