Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was arrested on 19 December by the Tehran police authorities and is in solitary confinement in Evin prison. This was announced by the Farnesina.
Farnesina: "Ambassador visited Sala in prison"
."On the instructions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, the Italian embassy and consulate in Tehran have been following the case" of the arrest of journalist Cecilia Sala "with the utmost attention since its inception. In coordination with the Presidency of the Council, the Farnesina has been working with the Iranian authorities to clarify Sala's legal situation and verify the conditions of her detention. Today, the Italian Ambassador Paola Amadei carried out a consular visit to verify the conditions and status of Dr. Sala's detention. The family was informed of the results of the visit'.
Sala 'is in good health. We will see what the charges are. The government is working with the utmost discretion to try to bring her back to Italy,' Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told Rainews24.
The European Commission is "following closely" the situation of Cecilia Sala, currently detained in Iran. This was stated to Ansa by the spokesperson of the EU executive responsible for foreign policy, Anouar El Anouni, without adding further comments to protect the confidentiality of diplomatic contacts. In Brussels, the case is considered particularly 'sensitive' given its connection with Tehran.
Chora Media: 'Cecilia Sala free voice, be freed now'
Cecilia Sala, 29, 'was in Iran to do her job with the care, passion and professionalism that everyone recognises. Her free voice has been silenced and Italy and Europe cannot tolerate this arbitrary arrest. Cecilia Sala must be freed immediately'. This was stated in a statement by Chora Media, the Italian Podcast company for which the journalist produces 'Stories'.
