Gianni Vasino, the very popular face of football on TV first on RAI, especially at 90° Minuto where he was one of the regular stars, and then in private broadcasting, has died at the age of 88.

For the Ligurian broadcaster Telenord, he pulled off a historic coup: he enlisted Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, then Archbishop of Genoa and later Vatican Secretary of State during the pontificate of Benedict XVI, as commentator for Sampdoria-Juventus (11 January 2004) and Genoa-Torino.

Born in Serravalle di Berra, in the province of Ferrara on 5 November 1936, Vasino had moved with his family to Sanremo, where he took his first steps in the world of journalism by collaborating with several local newspapers.

It was Paolo Valenti who wanted him in the team of 90º minuto, a programme with which he achieved widespread fame.

"We are saddened by the passing of a great professional who was part of our television family, writing a memorable page with his commentaries at the Ferraris together with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family,' says Telenord publisher Monti together with his father Alberto, the group's founder.
