An estimated 120,000 young people in and around St. Peter's Square attended the welcome mass and greeted the Pope.

The Pope, who surprisingly arrived in St. Peter's Square at the end of the official opening mass of the Youth Jubilee, greeted the tide of boys and girls in the square.
