Kia Ev3, everything you need to know about the new compact electric suv

The new model is a key part of the brand's electric road map because it will remain the least expensive for a long time and is inherent among B-suvs with an original line-up, larger in-vehicle technologies and many solutions that facilitate human-machine interaction.

Three in name and in fact. In fact, the Ev3 compact suv is the third model in Kia's native electric range so far formed by the Ev6 crossover-coupé and the large Ev9 suv. Models from which the Ev3 is detached by its much smaller size, but inheriting and in some cases even evolving their sophisticated technologies. The first front-wheel-drive model in the Ev family, the Ev3 attacks the compact SUV sector in which the presence of full-electric offerings is already quite numerous, but which will grow even more rapidly in the coming months with big ambitions, supporting Kia's electric offensive thanks to an original line, the equipment of a higher category car, Standard and Long range versions, basic and Gt-Line trim and prices that will be in the eco-incentives bracket;

Kia Ev3, harmonious and muscular line

Based on a specific interpretation of the native E-Gmp electric platform of the other two Kia Evs but with a shortened wheelbase of 2.68 metres, the Ev3 ranks among the more robust compact SUVs, being 4.30 metres long, 1.85 metres wide and 1.56 metres high. The line is practically the same as that of the concept car unveiled last year and recalls, on a smaller scale, that of the Ev9 thanks to the taut lines that develop fluidly, generating a well recognisable, well-proportioned, muscular but slender line. These prerogatives are imprinted by the squared-off wings and tailgate, the robust front bordered by LED matrix light signatures, and the original design of the tail surmounted by the spoiler that closes the slightly sloping trend of the pavilion that slims the profile while optimising aerodynamics, resulting in a Cd of just 0.267.

Kia Ev3, large, functional and user-friendly interior

The design is not only about emotionality but also rationality, balancing the compact exterior dimensions with the generous interior. As we were able to verify in the static face-to-face with the Ev3 in a preview at Frankfurt, the cabin offers plenty of space at the rear, is cosy, rationally minimalist and features a dashboard that supports the curved widescreen inherited from the Ev9. It is a maxi-screen that combines the 12.3" instrument and infotainment displays that are always connected via the 5.2" climate control display. The choice does away with the touch panel for switching between climate control settings and those for hi-fi and navigation found on other Kia cars, and rationally places physical buttons under the widescreen to quickly manage those functions and some of the car's services. In addition, the Ev3 offers a wider choice than the other Kia's of music and video streaming, as well as a collection of mini-games to pass the time while charging.

The picture is completed by other practical solutions such as the central armrest that transforms into a small table that can be used when stopping to recharge, by colour combinations inspired by nature and by the extensive use of recycled materials treated with innovative processes that even match the feel of leather upholstery. And those who want to know the composition of the patchwork can frame a Qr code on the right side of the dashboard. Another characterising chapter of the Ev3 is that of the equipment which, depending on the version or on request, can include, for example, electrically adjustable front seats and even heated rear seats, a 12.3" head-up display and Adas for semi-assisted driving level 2. In short, overall equipment similar to that of the Ev6 and Ev9.

Kia Ev3, one powertrain, two battery sizes and 400 V mains

.

The two versions of the Ev3 are powered by a powertrain at the front with 204 horsepower and 283 Nm of torque powered by a nickel-manganese-cobalt battery. In the case of the entry version, the battery has a capacity of 58.3 kWh and promises a range of up to 410 kilometres, while in the case of the Long Range version it is 81.4 kWh and extends the range to 600 kilometres. Both can also be recharged using the Plug&Charge function either in alternating current with 11 kW systems (in about 6 hours for the 58.3 kWh battery and less than 8 hours for the 81.4) or in direct current in half an hour, despite the fact that on the Standard Range version there is an on-board charger that accepts up to 102 kW, while on the other it is 128 kW. The 400V mains power supply allows for quick replenishment of electrons from the superfast systems, as well as releasing power to external devices, homes and the grid. In terms of performance, both Ev3s reach 170 km/h and reach 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.

Kia Ev3, with whom it compares

The electric SUVs to which the Ev3 is primarily opposed are the Jeep Avenger, Smart #1 and Volvo Ex30, but it can also be an alternative proposition to sedans such as the Renault Mégane E-Tech and Byd Dolphin.
