President Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg, who will lead the US delegation to the Ukraine Recovery Conference, will reportedly also participate, along with Prime Minister Meloni, Ukrainian President Zelensky, and other leaders present in Rome, in the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing to be held tomorrow, 10 July, on the sidelines of the conference. This is, it is emphasised, the first time that the US has taken part in the Coalition of the Willing format, in line with what has been strongly advocated by Italy since the group's inception.
Moscow expects that a third round of negotiations will be held between the delegations of Russia and Ukraine and that the dialogue will continue. This was stated today by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. "You know that some work has already been done: two very difficult rounds were held. We expect that the third one will be held and the dialogue will continue," Peskov told reporters.
Moscow's announcement comes on the day when Ukrainian PresidentVolodimir Zelensky arrived in Italy for the "Ukraine Recovery Conference 2025'" the conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine. Welcoming the Ukrainian president to the Quirinale before the conference, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, expressed Italy's position of full support for Ukraine. "Welcome to this palace," the Head of State began, "It is a pleasure to meet you once again to reiterate the great friendship that binds Italy to Ukraine and our country's full support for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to express our most intense and concrete closeness: our position remains absolutely firm. Mattarella also took the opportunity to express 'admiration for the behaviour of the Ukrainian people, which reinforces our conviction of full support and backing for your country'.
"Towards Ukraine we have sincere and convinced friendship. Italy is firm in its support for the Ukrainian people. And the intensification of the cruel Russian bombardments against the population and civilian infrastructure strengthen our determination to stand by Ukraine. At the same time, we are looking for any possible glimmer of hope to bring this dramatic affair to an end'. This was underlined by President Sergio Mattarella receiving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Quirinale. The Head of State also reiterated his support for Ukraine's entry into the European Union: "I hope that negotiations will be opened soon".
The Ukrainian president, Volodymir Zelensky, arrived at Villa Barberini where the Pope resides in Castel Gandolfo shortly after 1.30 p.m. During the face-to-face meeting with Leo XIV Zelensky ''invited the Pope to visit Ukraine'' and ''thanked him for the meeting and the very meaningful conversation''. As Zelensky wrote in 'X', ''we appreciate all the support and every prayer for peace in Ukraine'', stressing that ''the proposal to hold meetings at the level of leaders in the Vatican'' remains open and possible with ''the aim of stopping Russian aggression and achieving a stable, lasting and authentic peace''.A proposal that ''at the moment only Moscow continues to reject, as it has rejected all other peace initiatives'', the Ukrainian leader stressed. Zelensky insisted that ''we will continue to strengthen global solidarity so that diplomacy can still succeed''. In his meeting with Leo XIV, the Ukrainian president ''especially thanked the Pope for his support for Ukrainian children, especially those repatriated from Russian captivity''. Zelensky stressed that ''Ukrainian children now have the opportunity for rehabilitation and rest in Italy'' which ''are extremely important''. In today's meeting with the Pontiff, Zelensky ''also discussed the Vatican's continued efforts to help repatriate Ukrainian children abducted by Russia''.
