Mozzarella di Bufala Dop Mozzarella Alarm: Exports at Risk with Booming Costs
The Consortium: 3% increase in production in 2025 already thwarted. 35% of turnover depends on exports
The crisis in Iran with the complications on the transport front and the escalation of fuel prices is creating great difficulties for companies and especially export-oriented ones. Difficulties that become emergencies in particular for fresh food products and therefore with a reduced shelf life, which cannot be stored and must have a quick market outlet on pain of losing their quality characteristics.
More costs at each step
This is the case of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana Dop, which has launched a real alarm linked to sharp increases in production costs triggered by the Gulf crisis in Iran. In fact, the sector is experiencing significant cost increases at every step of the supply chain while the paraffin alarm at airports is seriously jeopardising exports worth 35% of total turnover.
A scenario that is thwarting the efforts made in 2025 when the sector ended the year with a 3.35% increase in production (to 57,000 tonnes).
The Consortium: We risk collapse
"The numbers are alarming," explain the Consortium for the Protection of Mozzarella DOP. "Logistics, packaging materials, and energy represent the main items of the increases, with the record for gas, which has registered a peak increase of almost 70%. The sum of all these costs impoverishes the supply chain, which risks collapse, squeezed between production difficulties and the high cost of transport for families. Moreover, the climate of uncertainty with respect to international scenarios further damages the sector's entrepreneurs, putting the brakes on projects and generating instability'.
"All the growth efforts made so far," commented the president of the Consortium, Domenico Raimondo, "are being thwarted by this new war front, which worries us very seriously, first of all because of the death toll, but also because of the economic implications. Targeted and urgent action is needed to be able to continue production. We need to defend successful Made in Italy in the world. Instead, the risks on aircraft refuelling in some airports are also putting our export system in difficulty, especially towards overseas countries, such as the US, where we are already suffering from Trump's tariffs".
