EU: Lagarde says we are deeply vulnerable when it comes to AI; we must prepare for a tidal wave
Over the weekend, “access to the most advanced AI models was suspended for 90 minutes” and this is therefore “a clear reminder of Europe’s profound vulnerability when it comes to artificial intelligence”. This was stated by ECB President Christine Lagarde, speaking at the 19th edition of the Cotec Europa symposium, ‘Rethinking Work in the Age of AI: Transformation, Opportunities and Governance’, currently taking place in Venice. “Our continent remains heavily dependent on systems developed by a handful of companies concentrated not only in a single jurisdiction, but in a single country within that jurisdiction,” she added. “Our dependence is growing every day, as these systems improve and their impact on our economy increases,” Lagarde warned. “We are facing a tidal wave,” she concluded. “We cannot hold back AI, but we can prepare ourselves so that people benefit from it and are protected from its threats. That is what we are trying to do.”
