The numbers speak for themselves and judge that this election Giorgia Meloni has overwhelmed it. The confirmation of the figure of the policies of two years ago, that 26% indicated as the bar to be confirmed, has been far exceeded. Fdi is travelling around 29% and overall the government majority is holding. A verdict that is not a foregone conclusion and in itself, however, not enough to shield the executive from internal fibrillations.
The League's result is very negative. The overtaking of Forza Italia added to that risky 9.2% will be the subject of a harsh confrontation sooner or later within the Carroccio. Matteo Salvini had also believed in the comeback by exploiting the contribution of General Roberto Vannacci and his winks to the right. But at the moment (while waiting to know the numbers on preferences) it does not seem to have been a winning move for the Lega Nord deputy premier.
Forza Italia and Tajani's victory
Meloni, however, was not the only one to celebrate the outcome of this electoral round. The other winner in the centre-right is undoubtedly Antonio Tajani. The vice-premier and leader of Forza Italia with 9.7% took his party not only beyond both the 8.3% of the 2022 political elections but also the 8.8% obtained by the Azzurri five years ago despite the fact that on both occasions Silvio Berlusconi was the candidate. Tajani played the card of centrist moderation and strong ties with the EPP. The result proved him right and now he will certainly use his success to strengthen his role in government as well as in Europe.
Throughout the election campaign, the leader of the Azzurro reiterated his opposition to agreements with Marine Le Pen , the leader of Rassemblement National allied with the League in Europe. A position that mirrors that of the EPP. On the contrary, the azure vice-premier continued to plead for an opening of the main European group towards the Conservatives (Ecr) in which Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia sit.
The holding of the government
.In any case, despite Salvini's disappointing result, the government should emerge from these Europeans unscathed. Meloni does not want to put her ally in difficulty. Salvini will probably put on a good face trusting that in the Carroccio the time for a showdown is not imminent and that in the meantime he will return to the White House Donald Trump .
