Two founders within a few hours: John Schulman and Greg Brockman. The former has declared that he will move on to rival Anthropic.

"This choice stems from my desire to deepen my focus on AI alignment and to start a new chapter in my career where I can return to practical technical work," Schulman wrote, adding, "I decided to pursue this goal at Anthropic, where I believe I can gain new perspectives and do research together with people who are deeply committed to the topics that interest me most."

The second Greg Brockman did not leave the company for a rival but declared that he wanted to take a break.

The two key men of OpenAi are joined by Peter Deng, head of consumer solutions who had joined OpenAI only a year ago.

The new departures follow similar earlier moves. First the departure of Jan Leike, who also joined Anthropic, then that of Ilya Sutskever, the company's chief scientist. In the count there would also be Sam Altman who, as we know, was the first of the founders to leave and is now the first to file a lawsuit against him. Below is the first web page certifying the birth of OpenAi. Reading the names helps to understand the haemorrhage the startup has undergone from 2015 to the present.

Their stories must also be studied well. Sutskever had supported the dismissal of Sam Altman as a board member, although he later said he regretted the choice. Not counting the 'first hour' departures those that followed Sam Altman's lightning-fast dismissal-re-hire in November

Helen Toner's version

We talk about Helen Toner together with Tasha McCauley. The former was perhaps the main source behind one of the most absurd mysteries in Silicon Valley history. . "I can finally go to sleep," Helen had said, commenting on the announcement of the new board. Her version of events would later suggest the reasons for the dismissal. Sam Altman is described as ambiguous, ambitious, and obsessed with the goal of being the first to achieve Agi (General Artificial Intelligence), a form of artificial intelligence so advanced as to be able to emulate and surpass the intellectual capacity of man. Toner blames him for having pushed for the public release of ChatGpt by providing inaccurate communications on the internal security processes of the Board of Directors, but above all, the even more serious failure to communicate the OpenAi Startup Fund.

The departure of security chief Jan Leike

.

Another clue behind this haemorrhage, however, is provided by Jan Leike, who was head of security and stated a few moments after announcing his resignation. "OpenAI must become a security-conscious AGI company".

A few days after its release, Sam Altman announced the creation of the Safety and Security Committee, a new committee that will oversee the training of the new AI model.

The new board,' the start-up itself explained in a note, 'is responsible for making recommendations to the board regarding safety and security for the company's projects and operations.

The first of these will be to evaluate and further develop existing safety practices over the next 90 days and share recommendations with the board. Who heads the committee? Himself, Sam Altman himself. The rest is history. And here we are today.

So why are they all leaving?

The latest leaks, however, may not be connected with the security policies within OpenAi. John Schulman himself clarifies this in a tweet. "To be clear, I am not leaving due to lack of support for alignment research in OpenAI. On the contrary, the company leaders have been very committed to investing in this area. Mine is a personal decision, based on how I want to focus my efforts in the next phase of my career". At Antrophic he will rejoin Ilya Sutskever.

Sam Altman's response is polite. He says thank you and writes:

"I met John for the first time in a café in Berkeley in 2015. He said something like 'on the one hand it seems ridiculous to talk about AGI right now, but on the other hand I think it's very reasonable and here's why and also why I think it's important to talk about it'". And then he concludes: 'he laid out a significant part of what became OpenAI's initial strategy. It took about 15 minutes and then we chatted awkwardly for another 45 :)". As if to say thank you for the initial strategy but now it is time for us to change.
