(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Buying is back on Leonardo - Finmeccanica, which is moving close to all-time highs. The stock has more than doubled its value since the beginning of the year, up 118%, and is following the momentum of the defence sector.
Among the factors supporting the share price today are Bloomberg's reports that the Bundestag's Budget Committee is about to approve the purchase of 20 new Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, worth a total of EUR 3.75 billion. The order is part of the modernisation programme of the German armed forces financed by the EUR 100 billion special fund post-Ukraine. The contract, according to a document quoted by the agency, will be managed by the German Ministry of Defence. The aircraft will be produced by the Eurofighter GmbH consortium, which is made up of Bae Systems (UK), Airbus (Germany and Spain) and Leonardo (Italy).
On the eve of the event, Leonardo's shares showed some weakness, with an article in the French daily La Tribune stating that talks with Airbus on the creation of a European satellite champion had stalled, as the Italian group and the French company Thales had asked for more time. Then, CEO Roberto Cingolani said that the first agreement for the satellite alliance between Leonardo, Thales and Airbus "could be a matter of days or weeks: the boards are looking at the numbers, I hope it will be done". At the end of the summer, there had been speculation of a preliminary signature by the end of September, with the aim of making the alliance executive within two years.
Finally, also on the eve in the evening, the news that the company had signed a new revolving credit facility with a pool of international and domestic banks for EUR 1.8 billion and a duration of 5 years. The new facility replaces the existing Esg-linked Revolving Credit Facility, reducing the margin by 30% and extending the duration until 2030.
