Leonardo: Edgewing joint venture secures a £4.6 billion contract for GCAP fighter jets
It will run for 18 months to make progress on the concept and design
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - A new international contract has been signed for the sixth-generation GCAP fighter programme. The GCAP Agency, the body representing the programme’s participating countries – Italia, the UK and Japan – has awarded a contract worth 4.6 billion pounds to the Edgewing joint venture (Leonardo, BAE and JAEIC). The contract will enable the completion of the advanced concept definition and programme evaluation phase, and allow for the joint detailed design and development to proceed. The agreement has a duration of 18 months and follows the one awarded in April – which expired at the end of June – worth 686 million pounds. Edgewing is the tri-national prime contractor and design authority for the GCAP aircraft.
The new fighter jet is due to enter service from 2035.
