The official name is Shard Place, but it was immediately nicknamed 'little Shard', the 'little brother' of the famous glass skyscraper designed by Renzo Piano next to the Thames at London Bridge. In contrast to the 'glass splinter', which houses offices, restaurants and a luxury hotel, the new 27-storey building, all glass like the Shard, is residential only and houses 176 flats..
Also designed by Piano, the building consists of two adjacent forms, a taller 100 metres and a lower one. Both appear to be suspended 16 metres above the ground, above a glass-walled entrance that includes a large space open to the public.
The flats of various sizes, from studios to three bedrooms, from 40 square metres to 140 square metres, are all furnished and only available for rent from June at prices starting at £700 per week. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer uninterrupted views of central London.
Residents have access to numerous common rooms on three levels, including a private cinema, a dining room with kitchen and chef on hand, a library, a gymnasium with sauna and a double-height winter garden that opens onto a large terrace with views of St Paul's Cathedral. The jewel in the crown, however, is London's highest outdoor swimming pool with a large terrace. Residents can choose between two shades of colour - lighter or darker - for the furnishings custom-made by the State of Craft design studio, with pieces by Cassina and B&B Italia and the possibility of choosing artwork from the thousand selected by Richeldis Fine Art. .
A few steps away from the complex, which offers a 24-hour concierge service, one can find Tate Modern, Borough Market and the Globe theatre, while one only has to cross London Bridge to get to the City.
The launch of Shard Place completes the triptych of buildings designed by Piano at London Bridge: the Shard, which remains the tallest skyscraper in Western Europe, the News Building next door which houses the headquarters of News International which publishes The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun, and now a residential-only complex.
