It is nothing new that at the Locarno Film Festival, auteur cinema plays a leading role, but this year's programme is much richer than usual with titles capable of satisfying the needs of the most avid cinephile audience.
Scheduled from 6 to 16 August, the 78th edition of the Swiss event focuses first and foremost on an International Competition with particularly important names: among them undoubtedly Abdellatif Kechiche, a Tunisian director who is one of the greatest talents of contemporary cinema and who won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 with 'The Life of Adèle'.
Locarno will feature "Mektoub, My Love - Canto two", the third chapter in a saga that began with "Mektoub, My Love - Canto one" (presented at the Venice Film Festival in 2013) and continued with "Mektoub, My Love - Intermezzo" (in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017): Kechiche has been accompanied by constant controversy in recent years, particularly for his way of working on set, but his ability to make cinema is not in question and his film will be the real event of this edition of the Locarno Film Festival.
An equally significant name in the competition is that of Radu Jude, a brilliant Romanian director who has made impressive titles in the past such as 'Unlucky Sex or Porn Madness' (Golden Bear in Berlin) or 'Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World': in Locarno he will present his version of 'Dracula', in a grotesque and satirical key, which will certainly not leave anyone indifferent.
