Lotto, Enalotto and Superenalotto, from tomorrow change. New tranche of price increases for cigarettes arrives
The decree signed by Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti comes into force on 27 January
From Tuesday, 27 January, the new reform of legal games, which are entrusted by the state to private individuals, begins. Also in the week comes the second tranche of increases for cigarettes: after the 30 cents increase already triggered for Philip Morris and other brands (Marlboros are now at 6.80 per pack), it is the turn of Camel, which, with a similar increase, would reach 6.30 euro per pack.
Controls
On 27 January, the decree signed by the Minister of the Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti, which regulates popular games such as Lotto, Enalotto, Superenalotto (forbidden to minors under the age of 18), enters into force. The measure aims to increase transparency and security. A recent hearing of the undersecretary for the Economy, Lucia Albano, in the Finance Committee of the Chamber of Deputies revealed that between 2020 and 2024 the Guardia di Finanza found more than 5,000 violations in the gaming and betting sector for a total evaded tax base of about 2 billion, equal to a lost revenue flow of almost 184 million euro. The Customs and Monopolies Agency has updated the 'black list' of sites not authorised to collect games and in 2026, i.e. less than a month ago, has already ordered the obscuration of a further 172 new websites. The total number of sites that have been blacked out has reached almost 12 thousand
The Fortune Tax
The reform distinguishes numerical games - i.e. games that are based on the prediction of one or more whole numbers out of a basket of whole numbers from 0 to 1,000,000 - into two broad categories: those with fixed odds, such as Lotto, 10eLotto and MillionDay, and those with a national totalisator, such as SuperEnalotto, Eurojackpot and Win for Life. The minimum value of the game stake is EUR 0.10, the maximum threshold is set at EUR 200, with minimum intervals of 10 cents. The total gaming stake may not exceed 1,000 euros. Among the measures of the measure is that 20 per cent of the winnings will go to the Treasury. So if a million is won, the takings for the winner will be 800,000 euro, 200,000 to the State. Winnings below 500 euro are exempt from the 20% deduction.
Collection of the prize between 60 and 90 days
The results of the draws must be highlighted in an Official Bulletin where at least the numbers drawn, the competition or the draw in question must be indicated. The lucky winner must, however, be careful to collect the prize within 60 days from the day after the publication of the Official Bulletin. For the national totalisator number games SuperEnalotto, SuperStar, SiVinceTutto SuperEnalotto and Eurojackpot, the deadline is 90 days. If the winner does not request payment within the deadline, the winnings are paid to the Treasury.
