Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli wins again: with the two regattas won it takes a four-zero lead over American Magic and moves closer to the final of the Louis Vuitton Cup. It may only take one race to qualify and pass the round. Doing it by Monday could be a good way to gain time for work and modifications ahead of the decisive match against what appears to be the now sure finalist Ineos Britannia who in turn is on a four-zero lead against Alinghi Red Bull Racing.
American Magic fought with more energy than on the first day, coming very close to a victory, in fact in the fourth race (the second today) it came within two seconds, 'seriously risking' overtaking the Italian boat in the last stern.
The battle is good, it makes one grow in attention and manoeuvres. You have to hand it to the Americans who lost their key man Paul Goodison for wanting to stay in the big Cup game, which they feel is slipping away for the second time because of an accident. Goodison broke five ribs when he fell into an open pass on the boat while helping the crew move the mainsail. In the morning they had reported him on the boat, but in fact a second crew list had Lucas Calabrese on board.
Without any real confrontation instead the races of Ineos Britannia and Alinghi Red Bull Racing, which lost badly, only proving capable of a confrontation in a strong windy start. It's a shame that the Swiss boat is so weak, the team keeps saying that "there are no speed problems" leaving it understood that it's a matter of crew and manoeuvres. Probably true, the track record of the Swiss sailors is not comparable with that of the other crews. Both Ineos and Luna Rossa play their first match point on Monday, expected wind around 8 10 knots, which so far has been favourable to Luna Rossa.
