Lovaglio: 'Mps-BancoBpm? Today we are focused on Mediobanca'

"Banco is an excellent bank with which we collaborate through Anima", but "today we are completely focused on pursuing this project" in relation to which "speed is fundamental" and which "we want to realise for the benefit of customers, employees and the territories: the focus today is on this operation", said Mps CEO Luigi Lovaglio, during a hearing before the parliamentary committee of enquiry on banks, when asked about an interest in BancoBpm.

Banca Mps's participation in Generali through Mediobanca 'is a source of income, it is welcome in our profit and loss account like all investments, it is an investment that must give a positive return,' Lovaglio said, adding that the Lion also represents an optionality for the bancassurance business and therefore 'we look at it from an industrial point of view'.
Regarding the role of the Mef in the shareholding structure, Lovaglio said that the role in the merger with Mediobanca produced 'one of the most brilliant operations carried out by the government, in a transparent manner, to the benefit of the market'.
The delisting of Piazzetta Cuccia
Il delisting di Mediobanca? «E’ presto per dirlo», afferma Lovaglio, in audizione davanti alla Commissione d’inchiesta del Senato a chi gli chiede anche di un’eventuale incorporazione di piazzetta Cuccia, sulla quale non risponde, e di una sparizione del marchio. «Il brand Mediobanca è sacro, così come lo è quello di Banca Mps», afferma il manager lucano che ribadisce come l’idea dell’operazione trasformativa di Siena per effetto di un’aggregazione con Mediobanca sia nata da lui e dal Cfo di Siena Maffezzoni e presentata l ministro Giorgetti il 16 dicembre del 2022 a valle dell’aumento di capitale e dieci mesi dopo lo sbarco del top manager a Siena chiamato dal ministro Franco. Altra possibilità sarebbe stata un’aggregazione tra pari e sul tavolo c’erano, tre anni fa, Banco Bpm e Bper, rivela, ma l’Ops di UniCredit sulla banca di piazza Meda ha fatto scattare la molla e spingere Bmps verso Mediobanca.
