Working in Africa has already been a reality for more than 10 years for Pangea Development Lda operating in Mozambique. The company holds 95 per cent of the shares in Pangea srl, which brings together the know-how acquired by five of Lucania's most reputable companies in the oil & gas sector.

It was a difficult challenge in 2012 to project skills from Basilicata to Mozambique. And so, when there was still no talk of the Mattei Plan, Lucanian entrepreneurs set off from Val d'Agri with investments of international scope in south-east Africa, where works and activities related to the oil & gas sector, the core business of a company with a global vocation, were planned.

"Pasquale Criscuolo, one of the founding partners of the Italian and Mozambican Pangea, emphasises: 'We were ahead of our time. We followed Eni in the start-up of activities in Mozambique and today we are a professional company with synergic and specialised skills in the oil & gas, environment, energy and ecology sectors, whose strengths are innovation, sustainability, safety, and environmental protection in compliance with European regulations.

A wealth of skills acquired over more than 50 years of activity that has allowed Pangea Development Lda to be set up with a local partner, as required by Mozambican regulations, a multidisciplinary company that guarantees integrated services by bringing together the mechanics of the Sergen srl - Officine D'Andrea group, the electro-instrumental of Elettra srl, the environment, waste, laboratory analysis, transport and logistics of Criscuolo Eco-Petrol Service srl and Garramone Management srl, and the industrial products of Danella Forniture srl.

The registered office is in Maputo and operational sites in the cities of Pemba and Palma, where Pangea has purchased 10 hectares of land on which it has built industrial warehouses and structures with offices and housing, creating a model of sustainable development with 25 employees, 20 of whom are Mozambicans and 5 Italian expatriates, with an investment of two and a half million, and a turnover that has doubled in the last four years, from 500,000 euro to over a million from 2020 to 2023.

Not only profit and business in what can be defined as the 'Pangea model', but also cooperation, integration and pluralism in a strategy that aims to create value by promoting local development, community growth, excellence and quality of interventions. Greater competitiveness, but with an approach aimed at creating long-term partnerships with the territories in which it operates. "We are investing with our companies in this direction,' adds Criscuolo, 'but we are looking with interest at the Mattei Plan for a global development of the territory. We need to create a culture, including an environmental one, and we can do this by investing in services, from primary services to sewerage and waste management'.

But professional skills are needed that are lacking in Africa. Skills must be trained, even beyond oil & gas, which are needed in the supply chain, from transport to logistics, catering, and hospitality. And while waiting for the government's initiatives to take shape, Pangea is tightening the timetable with a pilot training project, both on-site and distance, with the Salesian Sisters' Higher Vocational Institute in Pemba and Assoilschool in Viggiano. "Once they have finished their studies," explains Ida Leone, director of Assoilschool, "the young graduates will follow a distance learning course in connection with the multimedia classroom in Viggiano, which provides teachers at no cost, and an on-site course with Pangea professionals who alternate in technical and practical training. Another hypothesis on which we are working is to select the most skilled young people and bring them to Italy to train them in the company so that they can become trainers and tutors in Africa".
