Maccaferri (Ambienta) acquires Iterchimica and Surface Tech
Two projects in the field of sustainable materials for roads and infrastructure
Ambienta Sgr, an investment firm founded by Nino Tronchetti Provera and focused on sustainability, has announced that its platform company, Officine Maccaferri, has acquired Iterchimica and Surface Tech, which specialise in the production of materials for sustainable roads and infrastructure. Maccaferri will thus create a new division dedicated to high-performance materials.
The completion of the acquisition of Iterchimica is subject to the usual regulatory and competition authorities’ approvals. The owners of the two companies will reinvest alongside Maccaferri, becoming shareholders in the group whilst retaining leadership roles in their respective companies.
Iterchimica – founded in 1967 and based in Bergamo – operates mainly in Europe - develops additives and technologies that increase the durability of asphalt by over 75 per cent and enable the use of up to 100 per cent recycled asphalt, significantly reducing the reliance on virgin fossil-based raw materials. Among its most innovative solutions, Gipave reduces CO₂ emissions by around 40 per cent compared with traditional technologies.
Surface Tech – founded in 2013 and based in San Diego, operating in the North American market – complements this range with technologies designed to further extend the service life of flooring and reduce the amount of materials required for its maintenance. Its solutions based on aramid fibres (high-strength synthetic fibres) reduce cracking by 30–50 per cent, extending the service life of flooring and consequently reducing the need for repairs and replacements.
These two acquisitions represent a further step in Maccaferri’s growth as a leading global platform in the environmental engineering sector. By integrating these new capabilities, the group aims to progressively expand its technological base and consolidate its position in the sector of sustainable, durable and climate-resilient infrastructure. The transactions are also part of the group’s broader internationalisation strategy, which includes an expansion of production capacity in the United States.
