Make-up artists, 500 mln induced income but professionals still without a reference standard
All in all, make-up artists guarantee 'an enormous sector of our 'Made in Italy' industry', which should be able to count on a professional framework that is up to the job, explains Emma Pavanelli, first signatory of a bill to regulate the figure
In Italy, the professional make-up sector employs between 40,000 and 70,000 people, with an allied industry worth approximately EUR 500 million. Despite this, Make Up artists still cannot count on a framework regulation that frames their economic classification, in terms of Ateco code, and regulates their training in unambiguous terms with respect to local and regional regulations. To change this, the Pentastellata Emma Pavanelli MP has recently filed a bill (AC 2917) in the Chamber of Deputies. 'First of all,' she recalls, 'the make-up artist is an artistic make-up artist and therefore does no invasive work. Everything he applies, especially on the face, can, if desired, also be removed with soap and water, in addition to the various cleansers. Therefore here is the specific difference with the beautician.
Female-dominated professional sector
"Make-up artists in Italia are predominantly women. It is therefore a sector with a strong female vocation, but that is not all: they account for around EUR 500 million per year as far as induced activities are concerned, and over EUR 500 million as far as training is concerned," Pavanelli explained to Parlamento 24. Overall, the category of make-up artists counts up to 70,000 employees divided into various forms: "There are still no specific numbers precisely because of the lack of regulation," emphasises the M5s MEP. "Therefore we have on the one hand the employees, those who work in the retail sector in all the shops, perfumeries, pharmacies, but then we have the whole wedding sector where right now we know in recent years Italia has a strong vocation for destination weddings". Many tprofessional make-up artists also work in the fashion sector - "during Fashion Week in Milan, some 2,500 make-up artists are employed" - without forgetting "the many influencers who use make-up artists": all in all, "an enormous induced activity of our made in Italy", which should be able to count on a professional framework that is up to the mark.
