Maldives, exclusive video of the cave on Tg1 at 8pm
The Rome Public Prosecutor's Office investigates the death of five Italian divers, including professors and researchers, during a dive to 60 metres. The University of Genoa remembers the victims and reactivates their scientific profiles.
Key points
Tonight's 8 p.m. edition of TG1 exclusively features the video shot by rescuers from the Dan Europe foundation inside the cave in the Maldives where the five Italian divers lost their lives. For the first time, frames show the journey that took them from the first illuminated cavity to the second dark room. An exceptional document accompanied by the testimony of Sami Paakkarinen, one of the Finnish rescuers called in by the Dan Europe foundation to recover the bodies. "It is clear that they were too deep, in a place where they were not supposed to be.
They had the typical equipment for diving in the Maldives, but to go down into the cave you need more, more equipment, more tanks, the rebreather and safety equipment," said Paakkarinen.
The diving instructor emphasised the difficulties: 'I was afraid we would never find them, there was also the possibility that they were lost in the ocean and that no one would ever recover them. Then when we spotted the tunnel that was not on the map and we saw marks in the sand we realised that that was the way to go'.
Paakkarinen plans to return to the Maldives in the future 'to the same cave to map it, I think it has to be mapped correctly, only then can we prevent further accidents'.
