At the Paris 2024 Olympics, in the final race in Marseille, Italy's Marta Maggetti won the gold medal in women's windsurfing. It is the sixth gold for Italy. The silver medal was won by Israel's Sharon Kantor, the bronze by Britain's Emma Wilson.
"One step at a time"
."I have been calm all day, proceeding one step at a time". This was said by a beaming Marta Maggetti after winning the gold medal in windsurfing at the Paris 2024 Olympics. "I managed to think and made a tack before the others," the Italian added after crossing the finish line of the final regatta.
Biography
Raised on malloreddus and seada, Marta Maggetti shed tears of joy in the water in Marseille. The gold medal in windsurfing, version 4.0, came 'unexpectedly, I had very strong opponents, in particular the Englishwoman (Emma Wilson, who started as the favourite and finished third, ed.),' said the 28-year-old from Cagliari, the new Olympic champion, 'and it was wonderful. An incredible emotion'. Which she shares with her homeland, Sardinia, to which she says she is very attached.
His 'training ground' is the crystal-clear water of his home, where he lives, where he keeps his roots. That is why in the dedications of this gold there is also space for a monument of 'sardinia', one of the greatest footballers ever, Gigi Riva, who passed away last January. He who, from Leggiuno, in the north of Italy, chose Cagliari and Sardinia as his homeland, to the point of becoming one of its most beloved sons. "Gigi Riva was great for the whole of Italy and for us Sardinians,' says the Italian player. 'I dedicate this medal to my family, to the coaches, to the federation, and to the Fiamme Gialle, who allow me to practise these sports that I love.
From the age of eight, she was also inspired by Sensini, who became Olympic champion in windsurfing in Sydney 2000. "Alessandra is a role model, and it was wonderful to win a gold 24 years after hers," says Maggetti, who acknowledges that she has the indomitable nature of her Sardinian. But she flies low, in spite of that board, the new Olympic champion; "I had won a lot in the youth teams, it is true, but this gold came as a surprise and I can only be happy," smiles the Italian.
