A sensational feat by Massimo Stano in Podebrady, Czech Republic: he triumphed at the European Athletics Team Championships with a world record in the 35 km march in 2h20:43, winning the gold medal. He shattered the previous record of Canadian Evan Dunfee set in March (2h21:40) by almost a minute.
In Podebrady, in addition to Stano's world record victory in the 35 km, Italy also won the team gold medal thanks to Riccardo Orsoni's fourth place (2h26:09 PB) and Matteo Giupponi's ninth (2h28:57). There was also a team gold medal for the women: Italy led by Antonella Palmisano, in second place individually with an Italian record of 2h39:35 on her debut in the speciality, third place for Nicole Colombi (2h41:47 PB) and fifth place for Federica Curiazzi (2h45:39).
Stano, class of 1992, originally from Grumo Appulo, was Olympic 20 km champion in Tokyo 2020, world 35 km champion in Oregon 2022 and European record holder in this speciality.
