Mattarella: A handful of tech giants are encroaching on state domains – a matter of sovereignty
‘The concentration of control over new technologies in the hands of a very small number of private entities – which are encroaching on domains that until recently were the sole responsibility of states and organisations designated for such purposes by international treaties, starting with outer space – has made these entities so powerful that they presume to disregard, if not overturn, every rule.’ This is the warning issued by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, speaking at the 19th edition of the Cotec Europa symposium, ‘Rethinking Work in the Age of AI: Transformation, Opportunities and Governance’, currently taking place in Venice. ‘New self-proclaimed actors of questionable legitimacy, fuelling a new international disorder,’ he added. ‘This therefore raises a clear issue of sovereignty, on matters concerning the security of society and the rights of citizens.’
