Mattarella: 'Situation in Gaza unacceptable. The EU needs faster decision-making mechanisms".

"A quick reflection is needed, also involving the Arab countries, to find a solution to resolve the serious situation today". The Head of State, Sergio Mattarell, in his political talks today in Luxembourg with Prime Minister Luc Frieden and the President of the Chamber of Deputies Claude Wiseler, described the situation in Gaza as "unacceptable", calling for an immediate "ceasefire and the release by Hamas of all hostages" and recalling the traditional friendship that Italy has always maintained for both the Palestinians and Israel.

The long-term goal continues to be "the 'two peoples, two states' solution", which "may seem unattainable in this situation, but is the only viable path", reiterated Mattarella, who is convinced that it is necessary to work to "indicate a historical perspective that allows the Palestinians to have their own state, putting aside suffering and resentment, and that at the same time ensures the security of Israel".

The European framework was also at the centre of the meetings. "We need to find faster and more effective decision-making mechanisms because otherwise Europe risks being a bystander to solutions that will inevitably be decided by others".

Inevitably, Ukraine comes to mind. "No one wants to humiliate Russia or diminish its role," Mattarella said. "But the stubborn search for a solution must bring a true, stable peace based on law and justice. Otherwise it would not last."

Both Gaza and Ukraine,' the president continued, 'are not only decisive issues of international politics but deeply touch our consciences. It is unthinkable to return to the power politics of past centuries when the larger nations imposed their domination on the lesser and less powerful countries. That is the past, the future is collaboration and international cooperation along the lines of what the European Union has done over the past seventy years'.
