"Work-related deaths are a scourge that shows no sign of stopping and which, in our country, has already claimed hundreds of lives in these first months, with just as many families consigned to despair. Neither indifference nor resignation can be tolerated. It is clear that the commitment to safety at work needs to be strengthened. It concerns institutions, companies, workers. I thank CGIL, CISL and UIL for choosing safety and health in the workplace as the theme of a united May Day. So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, visiting the BSP Pharmaceuticals S.p.a. company in Latina on the occasion of the Labour Day celebration.

Duties risk, negative effects on Italy

"New risks arise from the prospect of widespread use of tariffs, an ancient form of show of force, which can hinder the right to access to care, to health, for every people in the world, especially the poorest and most fragile. Prospects that, moreover, produce negative effects on the global economy. Effects that can also affect our country,' continued the President of the Republic.

Families are struggling, wages are insufficient

"We all know how crucial wage issues are for the reduction of inequalities, for a fair enjoyment of the fruits of innovation, of progress. So many families cannot bear the rising cost of living. Insufficient wages are a big issue for Italy," Mattarella stressed.

Dialogue with trade unions is a key issue

"The confrontation between the social partners, the dialogue fostered by the institutions, has been in our history - with agreements of epochal value - a driver of civil, social, economic progress. The dialogue between companies and trade unions has many areas in which it can develop. It is always worth investing in dialogue, it helps to achieve goals of progress, as was the case with the invention of the welfare state in the last century. This is a key issue on the public agenda,' the president argued.

Fairness for migrant wages, respect Charter

"The treatment of migrants - with wages that, according to Oil, are a quarter lower than those of fellow countrymen - if not scandalous phenomena such as 'caporalato', must be firmly opposed. The character of our society is to measure the dignity of the working person, also to respect Article 36 of our Constitution. 'Let the principle of humanity never fail as the cornerstone of our daily actions,' Pope Francis reminded us in the Easter blessing, his last message,' he concluded.
