Among the essential reforms awaiting the European Union there are certainly 'the modes of decision-making, because problems in this world present themselves quickly and require timely responses: the European Union is not in this condition, it is not in a position to take timely responses because problems do not wait' for the times of this Europe. This is the conviction of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, speaking from Brdo on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Slovenia's entry into the European Union.

Vote in numbers, the EU needs bold reforms

As the Head of State recalls, almost 400 million citizens will vote. "And it will be a great exercise in democracy: I hope for a large participation in the vote so that citizens become protagonists of their future. Then it will be up to the institutions to make the Union a player on the international stage. We cannot remain in a situation where Europe is only a spectator even of events that are denied to the Union itself. This is a season that requires the courage of incisive and courageous reforms'.

History always presents a bill for lost opportunities

.

Mattarella's reflection expands to the painful scenarios of ongoing war. "Some countries find themselves on the border of the unacceptable Russian aggression that has violated every rule: their situation would be very different if they were not in the borders of the Union today. History always presents the bill for lost opportunities and then it is the peoples who pay dearly. This reflection urges the urgency of the completion of the European project, which is now more essential than ever, first and foremost for the Western Balkans, which have been waiting for twenty years: it cannot be delayed any longer'.
