Medicine: national merit rankings to be published on 12 January 2026

Minister Bernini signs the decree to open enrolment at the end of the open semester. The implementation phase of the reform completed.

The rankings for access to the single-cycle degree courses in Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics and Veterinary Medicine - in Italian - will be published on 12 January 2026 on the basis of the marks obtained at the end of the open semester examinations.

The Decree

The Minister of Universities and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, has signed the decree establishing the criteria for the formation of national merit rankings and the procedures for enrolment for the 2025-2026 academic year. The decree completes the implementation phase of the 'Medicine Reform', which provides for open semester enrolment with free access.

The rankings

The marks - expressed in thirtieths with the possibility of distinction - achieved in the individual examinations will be valid for the purposes of forming the national ranking. Each student enters the rankings on the basis of the mathematical sum of the marks for the three examinations, also expressed in decimals, due to correct answers (+1), incorrect answers (-0.25) and omitted answers (0). For the compilation of the student's personal career booklet, scores will be rounded to the nearest unit. The rankings will be published in the reserved area of the CINECA Universitaly portal (https://www.universitaly.it/medicina2025).

EU and non-EU students resident in Italy

As of 13 January 2026, each aspiring doctor will be able to enrol in his or her chosen degree course, at the first available location, in the order of preference indicated, based on the marks obtained and the number of places available. Matriculation must be carried out, under penalty of forfeiture, by 16 January 2026, without prejudice to the possibility for the student to matriculate and continue studies in one of the related courses chosen at the time of enrolment in the open semester.

From 21 January 2026 to 5 p.m. on 23 January 2026, students who, on the basis of the marks obtained, are not matriculated at one of the university campuses chosen in the order of preference indicated at the time of enrolment, may proceed to further choices of campuses that have residual places available.

Registration will then be possible from 26 to 29 January 2026.

Non-EU students living abroad

As of 13 January 2026, each aspiring doctor will be able to enrol in the degree course of their choice, at the first available location, in the order of preference indicated, on the basis of the marks obtained and the number of places available. Enrolment must be carried out, under penalty of forfeiture, by 16 January 2026, without prejudice to the possibility for the student to enrol and continue studies in one of the related courses chosen at the time of enrolment in the open semester.

Any places that remain unused on 21 January 2026 will be made available for the enrolment of students from EU and non-EU countries resident in Italy.

Alike courses

Students who are not usefully placed in one of the rankings for the degree courses in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine may enrol, even in excess - normally within the limit of 20% of the places available at each university -, in one of the related courses, in one of the locations indicated at the time of enrolment for the open semester, according to the order of preference expressed.

Registration will be possible from 3 to 6 February 2026. Students who do not register on time will no longer have a chance.

In the event of non-enrolment, any available places will be used for subsequent enrolments. From 12 February 2026 to 5 p.m. on 16 February 2026, students who, on the basis of the marks obtained, are not eligible to enrol at one of the university campuses chosen according to the order of preference indicated at the time of enrolment, may proceed to further choices of all the campuses that have residual places available. Enrolment may therefore be carried out, under penalty of forfeiture, from 17 February until 20 February 2026.

Also for related courses, the student will compete in the ranking according to the descending order of the marks obtained in the profit examinations.
