Medicine: Physics, Chemistry and Biology lectures for the open semester are available on the platform

Exercises relating to the Chemistry, Physics and Biology syllabuses for upper secondary school are already available at www.semestreaperto-medodovet.it; these resources are designed to enable students to self-assess and consolidate their knowledge before the start of the Open Semester. Once lessons begin, targeted practice exercises covering the various teaching modules of each subject’s syllabus will first be made available, followed by mock exams to simulate those scheduled at the end of the Open Semester.

These mock exams, which cover all the teaching modules scheduled for the semester, will consist of a similar number of questions and allow a similar amount of time for answering as the actual exams.

PHYSICS: UNDERSTANDING THE LAWS THAT EXPLAIN THE WORLD

The foundations of every field of science and technology are laid by the laws of physics – principles that describe phenomena ranging from the subatomic world to the vast expanse of the cosmos. The Physics course has been developed thanks to the contribution of university lecturers and researchers who, through an accessible and engaging approach, guide students in discovering the fundamental concepts of the discipline. The lectures enable students to understand the key terms of physics and, at the same time, to familiarise themselves with the scientific method of reasoning that characterises this subject. Topics covered in the various lectures and accompanying exercises include:
Physical quantities, measurement, interdisciplinary concepts; Kinematics; Basic and advanced dynamics; Hydrostatics; Thermodynamics; Electricity and magnetism; Optics; Modern physics: atomic structure and decays, wave–particle duality.

BIOLOGY: EXPLORING THE COMPLEXITY OF LIFE
Why is it important to understand how living organisms function? What do a jellyfish and a whale have in common? The Basic Biology course answers these questions through nine lessons developed by a group of university lecturers from various institutions and their young research assistants.
The course introduces students to the science that studies living beings and biological phenomena, providing fundamental knowledge to help them choose a university degree programme and tackle some of the major scientific issues of our time, with particular attention to issues that have an impact on human health and the balance of ecosystems.
Topics covered in the various lessons and accompanying exercises include:
proteins; cellular osmosis; fundamentals of genetics: inheritance of monogenic traits; how eukaryotic cells divide; the human nervous system; elements of plant biology; elements of bioenergetics; energy and matter in ecosystems; applications of knowledge in the life sciences.

CHEMISTRY: THE PRINCIPLES UNDERPINNING MATTER AND ITS TRANSFORMATIONS
Chemistry is the science that studies the composition, properties and transformations of matter through experiments, theories and models which identify atoms as the fundamental constituents of matter.
The course, developed with the contribution of university lecturers, guides students towards an understanding of the fundamental concepts of chemistry and the scientific method of reasoning specific to this discipline.
The course provides the essential foundations for undertaking any future studies in the fields of science and technology, offering an initial grounding that is useful for understanding the phenomena, processes and applications of chemistry in everyday life and in research.
Among the main topics covered in the various lessons and related exercises are:
the macroscopic properties of matter: the particle model; the microscopic properties of matter and the composition of substances; chemical reactions, compounds, the properties and nomenclature of compounds; solutions, acids, bases and their reactions; oxidation and reduction; an introduction to organic chemistry.
