The PM in Lebanon on Friday

Meloni: 'On arms to Israel more restrictive than partners'. And on Poste: "It remains in Italian hands".

The Prime Minister in the Senate for communications ahead of the European Council of 17 and 18 October. In the afternoon, the reply to the House. "There is a rising anti-Semitism that must worry us all," the Prime Minister added, reiterating that "the EU summit will confirm support for Ukraine". And again: 'I hope in the OK to Fitto without distinctions, he will make the case for flexibility'. The hope is that 'the EU will look into possible common debt instruments'.

First the Senate, then the Chamber of Deputies approved the majority resolution on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's communications in view of the European Council. In the case of Palazzo Madama the yes votes were 104 yes, 65 no and 2 abstained. In the House the yes vote was 190, the no vote 117, and 10 abstained. The premier spoke in the morning in the Senate, in the afternoon in Montecitorio.

"After the start of operations in Gaza, the government immediately suspended all new export licences" and "all agreements signed after 7 October have not been applied. The licences authorised before are all being analysed on a case-by-case basis by the competent authority at the Farnesina," said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during her reply in the debate on communications in the Senate ahead of the European Council. "I want to recall that the Italian position of a complete block on all new licences is much more restrictive than that applied by our partners, France, Germany and the United Kingdom: these partners continue to operate a case-by-case assessment also for new licences, we have blocked everything".

"Although there have been no victims or significant damage, I believe that Israel's attack on Unifil "cannot be considered acceptable" and this is the position that Italy has taken with determination at all levels: we demand that the safety of our soldiers be guaranteed both in Unifil and in the bilateral mission, who together with the rest of the international community have contributed for years" to the stability of the border between Israel and Lebanon. So said the Prime Minister in her speech to the Senate ahead of the European Council, stressing that "the attitude of the Israeli forces is completely unjustified and a blatant violation of UN Resolution 1701". We must "work on the full application of the resolution, strengthening the full capacity of Unifil and the Lebanese armed forces".

Prime Minister: Poste remains in Italian hands, we do not sell off jewellery

After the Senate, in the afternoon Meloni spoke in the Chamber of Deputies in the debate on communications ahead of the European Council. Among the topics addressed was the privatisation of the Poste. 'Poste in any case must remain in the hands of the Italians,' she stressed, 'this is how the government is moving. Because unlike what we have often seen done in this country, we do not intend to sell off any of the family jewels'.

Meloni: Justifying Hamas and Hezbollah is anti-Semitism

In her speech to the Senate, however, the Prime Minister also said that 'remembering and strongly condemning what happened on 7 October 2023, is the prerequisite for any political action we must take to restore peace in the Middle East, because increasingly the albeit legitimate criticism of Israel is mixed with a justificationism of organisations such as Hamas and Hezbollah, and this, like it or not, betrays something else. It betrays a rising anti-Semitism that, I believe, should worry us all. And the street demonstrations of recent days have, unfortunately, demonstrated this without fear of contradiction'.

"I will go to Lebanon and Tajani to Israel and Palestine"

.

"I am already scheduled to go to Lebanon, and Minister Tajani is preparing to go to Israel and Palestine next week," announced Meloni in her reply. 'Even with our presence,' she added, 'we are doing everything we can do'. In her reply to the House in the debate on communications ahead of the European Council, she clarified: "I should be in Lebanon on Friday (18 October 2024, ed.)".

"Reasoning about Gaza after ceasefire"

"We all agree on peace, Italy has been working since the beginning in Ukraine and the Middle East to build peace, then we have to agree on how peace is built in practice: in the Middle East it means continuing to work for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. It's not easy, but it's the work on which we work every day, me and the relevant ministers. It means the ceasefire, the release of hostages. I think that the European Union can and must play a role and that we must already think concretely about what should happen in Gaza after the cease-fire, how to concretely accompany the transition towards the two peoples and two states option," added the Prime Minister, again during her reply in the debate on the communications in the Senate ahead of the European Council, replying to Lega Nord senator Elena Murelli.

"EU summit will reiterate support for Ukraine"

.

Meloni also reiterated that 'The European Council will reiterate its support for the Ukrainian cause to build a just and lasting peace and help it look forward to a future of prosperity and well-being. Defending it is in Italy's and Europe's interest".

"I hope OK to Fitto without distinctions and hesitations

"I hope that all the Italian political forces will take an active role with their European political families so that this result for our nation can be achieved quickly and without stumbling". So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in her communications to the Senate ahead of the European Council regarding the indication of Raffaele Fitto as commissioner and vice-president of Ursula von der Leyen's new EU commission. "There are times," she added, "when the national interest must prevail over the partisan one: I hope it will be one of these without distinction and without hesitation.

"Fitto will make the case for flexibility in the EU"

.

Commissioner Raffaele Fitto's 'delegation to the NRP', 'according to the President's indications, will have to be exercised jointly with Commissioner Dombrovskis: some have read in this collaboration a rigorist mortgage, but this collaboration of an equal nature rather represents an opportunity for the Italian commissioner to make the case for a necessary greater flexibility in investments, a historically Italian position that has found an initial partial acceptance in the reform of the Stability Pact,' the Prime Minister added in her communications to the Senate.

Pd: we are different and on Fitto we will defend Italian interests

"In Italy we oppose Fitto, but we will know how to behave accordingly by defending Italian interests in that forum. Our vote will always be in Italy's interest and we will know how to behave differently from the way you did by calling the square,' he said. So said Alessandro Alfieri, PD senator replying to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the vote for Raffaele Fitto as European commissioner. Alfieri said this while speaking in the Senate chamber after Prime Minister Meloni's communications on the forthcoming EU Council, recalling that Meloni herself, as leader of Fratelli d'Italia, "on 5 September 2019, she even called to the square against inciuciusies, writing 'no thanks to Gentiloni' (as EU commissioner, ed.). For the sake of truth, we do not accept lessons in style, we know how to behave'.

"EU to explore possible common debt instruments"

.

We will have to be ready to test the possibility of new common debt instruments, as well as to work on finally being able to mobilise private capital properly,' Meloni further explained in her address to the House. 'Completing the Capital Markets Union would, in fact, allow European savings to become European investments,' she added. 'We know what we have to do, in short, but we need to do it now. We need concrete political actions that transform our priorities into an ambitious European industrial strategy, to ensure the growth of companies, the protection of industry, the simplification of the regulatory framework'.

"On stop 2035 endothermic engine have courage to reopen game"

.

On the European stop on petrol and diesel cars from 2035, "we must have the courage to reopen the game and pursue the path of ecological neutrality, supporting sectors such as biofuels, in which Italy and Europe can play a leading role". For Meloni, 'it is necessary to address the issue of how to finance investments towards a cleaner automotive, how to support innovation, how to guarantee an ever greater strategic autonomy, building European value chains so as not to consign ourselves to new, dangerous dependencies,' Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni went on to say. 'It is precisely in this direction that the non-paper presented by Minister Urso to the colleagues of the other twenty-six Member States goes, which will serve as a basis for discussion to broaden the consensus around our position, inspired by common sense and pragmatism, with no room for ideological approaches,' she added.
