Meloni: Trump’s decision on Russian diesel is very risky
The surge in fuel prices is down to Iran, not Ukraine
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - "In this context, we must also take into account the agreement on Russian diesel announced last Friday by US President Donald Trump. It is a decision that I consider very risky". So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in her address to the Senate ahead of the EU Summit.
"Clearly, we all understand – and agree with – the need to keep energy prices in check, as they are a burden on households and businesses, including in Italia. But we must be aware that the surge in fuel prices is primarily due to the war in Iran, not the conflict in Ukraine. Therefore, the outcome of this decision is uncertain, whilst the risks are clear. It provides legitimacy for Moscow whilst its bombs continue to fall on Ukrainian cities, generates new revenue to fund the war, and implicitly weakens the leverage of sanctions: these are factors we cannot ignore, and which contradict what Western states, including the United States, have done so far to pressure Putin into coming to the negotiating table.”
