Mercedes announced that it has produced G-Class no. 600,000. The suv, which has been on the list for 46 years, is an electric G 580 with EQ technology and metallic black trim. It rolled off the assembly line at the Graz factory in Austria, where all G-Classes are produced. This is an important milestone for G and not only because 600,000 is a significant number, but also because Mercedes only two years ago celebrated G-Class number 500,000.

The flagship of the Mercedes range

.

For Mercedes to produce another 100,000 luxury suvs in such a short time represents a very significant growth. Not to mention that it took three years to go from 400,000 to 500,000 G-Classes produced and about the same time from 300,000 to 400,000 units. While the S-Class and E-Class have been in production for longer, the iconic G-Class SUV has now become the flagship of the Mercedes range, with high list prices and waiting lists that can last for years.

It is Mercedes' most customised model

.

The G-Class is also the most customised car in the Mercedes range. Since more than 90 per cent of buyers choose at least one option in the Manufaktur catalogue, an average of three. The demand for exclusive colours has also increased in recent years. In 2024, in fact, the choice has expanded to over 20,000 available colours for the G-Class, again based on the customisation programme that, after all, supports all models of the Stuttgart-based brand.

The same level performance in off-road

.

Although the G-Class has evolved since its debut in 1979, the reasons for its success can be attributed to its ability to maintain an almost unchanged format for 46 years. An incredible feat considering the updates in safety requirements and even aerodynamics. And despite everything the G is faster and more luxurious today, it retains the same off-road performance, thanks to a chassis with side members, a two-speed torque divider and three lockable differentials.

Coming in 2027 a baby G-Class

At Mercedes, however, they have already planned a small G, the little sister of the current one, with more compact dimensions and coming in 2027. Based on the MMA platform, the same as the new CLA, it will be available with hybrid engines, petrol and diesel, as well as electric powertrains. In addition, it will offer all-wheel drive. The body will still be boxy, however, as well as offering some distinctive details of the model: the turn indicators and the external spare wheel.
