Key points
For Italy's yes, which was decisive for the passage of the free trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur (the South American bloc comprising Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay),"strengthened guarantees and safeguard clauses were required to protect certain sensitive sectors of the agri-food industry".
It was government representatives, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who said this after the doubts brought to the European Council on 18 and 19 December. And now the Farnesina underlines it, a few hours after the green light from the EU countries' ambassadors in Brussels. The signing is expected on 17 January in Paraguay.
What the agreement provides for
The agreement provides for the elimination or reduction of tariffs on products and services that account for more than 90% of European exports, including sectors in which Italian offensive trade interests are concentrated, such as automotive, industrial machinery, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
Prohibition of imitating more than 340 EU products
