Friedrich Merz's government team is taking shape: the next German Chancellor has chosen the energy utility manager, Katherina Reiche, as Economy Minister and the loyalist, Johann Wadephul, for Foreign Affairs: pro-European and a strong supporter of Ukraine, just like Merz, Wadephul will be the first member of the Cdu to hold the post after almost 60 years.
Merz will appear in the Bundestag on 6 May to gain a vote of confidence and start the mandate, at the head of the alliance between the Union of Conservatives Cdu-Csu and the Social Democrats of the Spd. Together they count on 328 of the 630 seats in the House, a reduced majority that really does not allow to speak of a Grand Coalition.
The Cdu will have seven ministers, the Csu three, the Spd seven.
Who is Katherina Reiche
A former member of the Cdu parliament, Reiche (51) has been managing director of the regional energy infrastructure company Westenergie, a division of E.on, Europe's largest electricity grid operator, since the beginning of 2020. Previously, she led the German association of local utilities.
The 51-year-old manager also sits on the supervisory board of the car parts group Schaeffler. Various industry associations value her competence and experience.
